life + style to you: every Friday
|
|
 |
www.SeattlePicksforMen.com launches next Friday--won't you help us spread the word? Please tell your guy friends up north to sign up today.
April 18th, 2008
We’ve been dreaming about sandals. Strappy sandals. Platform sandals. Wedges with cutouts. When we wake up, we are disappointed to realize the cute patent pair from our reveries will not be in our closet. Sigh. Some might consider us shallow, but we’re the first to admit that a shoe daydream does the trick when we need to escape the (sometimes harsh) realities of daily life. We’ve even been known to escape to our bedroom to try on our favorite shoes when the going gets tough.
So yes, we shop! And we encourage you to do the same. After all, the last thing we need on our “Guilt List” is a feeling that we didn’t do enough to support our local businesses, when the resources to find them are right here! So go forth, you beautiful, intelligent, shoe-lovin’ ladies, and forget your troubles. …we know just the place to make it all go bye-bye…
ps: Have you ever wondered about your personal history or your purpose in life? Forward this issue to 5 friends and CC picks@portlandpicks.com – you could win a free 45-minute clairvoyant reading by Sonja Grace! See below to find out more about Sonja… and yourself. |

We Want It Now
The other day we were thinking how the bathrobe was the perfect apparel item. It’s easy to fasten. It’s no biggie if you need a larger size. You can wear it to meals—and won’t need a napkin. You can even answer the door in it. But when we need to leave the house, it’s awesome to require only one store for all of our apparel needs. And that store … is Covet.
Walking into this aptly named boutique, we realized what our closet heaven looks like. Everything is easy to wear and effortlessly stylish. Basics that aren’t boring. The perfect Citizens of Humanity jeans. Amazing bags—even some that we’re losing sleep over because we didn’t snap them up right away. Flattering and affordable dresses by Chaiken. We made a note to put in an extra deduction on next year’s tax return, just to ensure any refund will be spent here.
And on May 3 Covet is throwing a grand opening party, with a raffle for a store gift certificate! We are so there. Look for us in the bathrobe.

Celebrity Style, Everygirl Prices
We were on the elliptical yesterday, reading an article in some magazine about how a celebrity made over her assistant’s apartment, taking it from blah to fabulous. Seriously, who wouldn’t have a fabulously decorated apartment if a lot of money was involved? Because we were left feeling a little blah about our own apartment, we decided to head over to eccedomus, a new store on NW 23rd that carries unbelievably beautiful furniture and housewares at prices that folks without celebrity bosses can afford.
Predominantly from Asia, the furniture at eccedomus is handcrafted and made from Indonesian Teak, which is conditioned for longevity and is rare to find. From dining room tables to coffee tables, cabinets and chests, most pieces have a traditional feel with a modern edge. Teak also means that the pieces are sustainable (so we’ll have them forever), which leaves us able to splurge on accessories for our apartment that can be swapped out throughout the year.
Who needs a celebrity-decorated apartment when we can do it ourselves? Thank you, eccedomus, for the inspiration.

Sassy Britches
When we were little our brother called us all sorts of names like “sassy britches” or “fancy pants.” After all, we were the only girl in the family, and quite spoiled. So imagine our delight when we stumbled upon Fancy Pants Children's Boutique—we just new it was meant for us (or rather, for our kids, nieces, and nephews).
Just a short jaunt off the I-205 bridge in Vancouver sits this out of the ordinary clothing and accessories boutique with something for babies through pre-teens (and some stuff for mom too), including a super cool selection of boys’ clothing. The owners of Fancy Pants, former flight attendants and good friends, are committed to carrying unique items, including some organic items, especially brands by local (Portland and Vancouver) designers. The boutique also has a charity program dedicated to helping children in the community through proceeds from the sale of certain items.
Our brother can tease us all he wants. Now we know we aren't alone! Oh, and Portlanders, don't worry—you don't have to pay taxes in Washington.

Knowledge is Power
In high school, we were watching two boys toss around a football when the ball went rogue and rolled nearby. The knowledge was instantaneous; one of the boys liked us. And weeks later when he asked us out, we discovered that we were right. So, yeah, we're a little bit intuitive. And if we can tell at a glance whether a guy is interested, surely there are people who can sense a heckuva lot more.
Sonja Grace is one of those people. After years refining her abilities, Grace has brought her talent for clairvoyance to Portland. And she’s no fly-by-night psychic. She's consulted with spiritual leaders, celebrities and regular Janes. She's talked with guiding angels, relatives and pets that have passed on. And she even spent time with us, sharing information about our ultimate purpose (it's world-changing), our grandmother, and how we feel with our heart instead of our gut.
Grace's strength is in interpreting the past, present and future, including the healing of emotional and physical problems. Clairvoyant, counselor or just a kind person, you’ll be glad you called.

Love the Transition
With the dreariest days behind us, it’s time to start bringing the brights back to our wardrobe. Still, ditching the black, navy and gray can be difficult. So why not keep the solids and add a color splash with your jewelry?
One of our favorite ways to “pop” an otherwise basic outfit is with a candy-colored glass confection from Portland’s 1480 Degrees. Minimalist without being boring, these simple squares make the spring transition easier than ever.

A Mighty Fine Wine
We love a good wine, but we don’t know a nose from a leg, so we rely on our taste buds to lead the way. And lately they’ve led us to a luscious Pinot Noir Rosé from Van Duzer Vineyards.
It’s fruity but not too sweet, crisp without being dry, and best of all, it’s pink! And at a totally reasonable $16 a bottle, we are making this our go-to gift for all cocktail parties this summer. That is, of course, after we stock our own fridge with a case.

This eye-popping, mind-boggling, non-sexual show is no trick—no sock puppets!—just two naked penis puppeteers, presenting the ancient Australian art of genital origami with an astounding series of penis installations.
