June 6th, 2008
We are already sick of the Sex and the City movie.
Full disclosure: We haven't even seen it, but the onslaught of hype is kind of ticking us off. Sure, we want to ogle the shoes and fab handbags, but we'll happily wait for the movie to show up on cable before we plunk down 9 bones to cram our behinds into tight theater seats with 249 giggling women wearing "I'm the Charlotte” tees.
And—no joke—we can totally see SATC becoming a kind of working-girl's Rocky Horror Picture Show. Imagine it! Ladies of all ages packing theaters at midnight on Saturdays, dressing up like their favorite characters, comically acting out the parts in front of the screen and throwing Circus Peanuts every time Big changes his mind about Carrie.
Now—honestly—we mean absolutely no offense if you went opening week and loved the movie—the truth is we'd probably love it too if we weren't so gosh-darn bitter about the whole thing.
Wait... does that make us the Miranda??? |

Love, Exciting and New
Despite what Mother taught us, we are firm believers in love at first sight—especially when it comes to our love affair with boutiques. Our boutique of the moment? Betsey Johnson—yes, you heard right—the Betsey Johnson, queen of fashion f-u-n—is now in PDX.
The boutique is chock full of Betsey’s signature style—bright patterns, polka dots, girly bows and short hemlines perfect for summer flirting. With Tea Party dresses, cocktail dresses, summer dresses and elegant eveningwear, we couldn’t help but try on one of everything in the store. Must-haves included the Printed Cotton Butterfly Baby Doll with Ruffle Neck for everyday style, and the Evening Goldmine Strapless Sheath Dress for special occasions (even if every day is our reason to celebrate!)
The pink walls and black-and-white checkerboard floor lured us in, and the Betsey Johnson handbags, shoes, belts, watches, sunglasses, jewelry, perfume, leg wear and lingerie kept us occupied for hours. Forget courtship, we’re in love and ready to move in!

Let's Get Physical
It's no surprise that we love fashion. We love looking at it and reading about it, but somehow stop short of buying it. We start to second-guess ourselves. Will high-waisted pants hide or accentuate our muffin tops? Do culottes make our thighs look big? Leggings? Let's not even go there. We were convinced that only models could pull off high fashion—that is, until we found Physical Element.
We've always prized Physical Element for their fabulous workout clothes. But when they recently remodeled and changed their focus from fitness to fashion, our muffin tops did a happy dance. Their casual urban lines by European, Japanese, and local designers are made of body-skimming fabrics with lovely, feminine details. We never thought we'd use "sexy" and "windbreaker" in the same sentence, but Cop.Copine makes the sexiest windbreaker ever, and PE is the only place in town that carries it.
At Physical Element, functionality and fashion go hand in hand. So enough with the second-guessing; run over to Physical Element and tell them Portland Picks sent you.

Ren & Stimpy?
Some things just naturally go together. Peanut butter and jelly, Laurel and Hardy, us and designer handbags… But who’da thunk that some seriously oddball mixtures—citrus and pistachio, for example—would wind up giving classic combos a run for their money?
The answer is Eva Bernhard, the brains behind Cool Moon Ice Cream Company, our favorite sweet spot in the Pearl. Open just a few short months, Eva has worked hard to create frosty concoctions that just can’t be found anywhere else. You’ll flip for the ultra-tart Campari-grapefruit sorbet, swoon for coffee-caramel and eat up the chocolate-Zinfandel. You can even try them all with The Real McCall, featuring 10 scoops, 5 sauces and lots of public participation.
With all-natural, Oregon-grown ingredients combined in some of the most innovative ways we’ve ever seen, the pairing of us and Cool Moon is sure to last all summer long.

Go Downtown, Young Woman!
We don't get downtown as often as we'd like, what with all the funky little shopping areas Portland has to offer. But on a recent trip with our girlfriend, we discovered that the 30-year-old downtown mainstay, Mercantile, had moved. And re-finding it, we fell in love all over again.
With fashion from the U.S. and abroad, Mercantile boasts a collection of designer goodies from such names as Velvet, Fabrizio, Eileen Fisher, Babette and Zanella, plus handbags by Burberry, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and more. The staff was helpful and encouraging as we tried on outfit after outfit, having fun with the whole shopping experience. We couldn't decide whether to play dress-up with all the romantic "special occasion" pieces or dress down in some of the more hip options. And when our girlfriend found some trousers she simply had to have, yet measured a full leg too long, we discovered Mercantile has its own personal tailor. On staff!
It was definitely an afternoon to remember, and it reminded us to make our way downtown more often!

A Wild Hair
We used to be so daring with our hair. Once we shaved the underside of our head a la Jason Newsted from Metallica, circa 1992. Unfortunately, that cut was later the topic of a documentary starring “real people with really bad hair.”
Nowadays, leaving our hair down is as bold as we get. So to get out of our ponytail rut we decided to go short with the help of Fusion Cut and Color. Multnomah Village’s quaint salon doesn’t scream fancy, but we found it’s the place for us budgetistas to go for A Really Good Hair Cut. And when we say that, we mean A Really Good Hair Cut. Together, mother and daughter team Adrienne and Tamara have more than 20 years of experience in hair design, edging on fun and funky. Let’s just say we felt safe even as huge chunks of our hair fell to the floor.
Thanks to Fusion, our wild hair is back! If anyone wants to make a documentary about people with really great hair, you know where to find us—at Fusion!

Decorate Your Life
As home-décor junkies, we know our way around the Web. We know where to get everything from mod wallpaper to vintage pillows, but we keep coming back to Burke Décor.com.
We’re obsessed with the Surya serving tray—durable enough to take outside for afternoon snacks, and cute enough for indoor functional art. We also love their accessories, and you can receive 10% off by entering “GETIT” at checkout, or enter “TEA” when you spend $50 or more for a free Beautea Bar of Soap!

The Lollipop Guild
We're getting older and more single by the day. Yet, admittedly, we find ourselves looking forward to mommyhood, and even that marriage thing.
Until then, we're cool with dating a few Mr. Right Now’s, and spoiling cute kiddos in our life with really cute duds! Like Munchkin Designs' "Big Brothers Rock" or "Big Sisters Rock" tees. Drum up some excitement for a pending munchkin with these adorable, super-soft, fully customizable shirts. They're bound to make a big brother or big sister proud!

Everybody Does It!
There’s a book called “Everybody Poops” that we really need to circulate in certain strategic locations—the office, the boyfriend’s bathroom, high-school locker rooms. Seriously—it’s like there’s a conspiracy to keep the fact that women go #2 a societal secret. But then again, maybe that’s not so bad.
Enter: Just A Drop. With just one drop (literally) in la toilette before you go, almost 98% of personal odors are eliminated. Now it’s easy to keep our little secret!

The Science of Skincare
We’ve heard about the magic of PerriconeMD Cosmeceuticals but, with our cheapo habits, we never tried them. So when a friend offered us a bottle of hers to sample we jumped at the offer.
After a week with the Advanced Face Firming Activator, miracle of miracles, it diminished those fine lines on our foreheads and shrunk pores like a laser ray! We felt like we looked 10 years younger, and decided to make this a regular investment in our beauty regime.
