  PORTLAND PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
May 1st, 2009

Is it just us or is grocery shopping a week-long chore for everyone? We have to hit three different stores just to get what we like. One store has the hummus we're addicted to (we seriously need an intervention), another has good prices on the milk/yogurt/soymilk trifecta, and a third has the good fruit and the dog food we buy. Ugh! Even more annoying—we usually have to revisit one or two of them later in the week to get a key ingredient that we forgot for that night's dinner.

The boyfriend is always telling us that if we planned our meals for the week we wouldn't need to make multiple trips, but inevitably, something comes up. We'll go out to dinner one night and for drinks the next, so the crunchy veggies for stir-fry are a wilted mess by the time we get to them. What would help us here? How do we remedy this situation? One word: Ramen.

Keep Portland Chic

We love Portland for lots of reasons, but especially because it does its own thing. Proudly. And it certainly has its own style. (Sometimes good, sometimes questionable.) Why else would we have created "Keep Portland Weird" bumper stickers? (Psst… we really don't think the stickers are necessary; we're doing a good job on our own.)

When it comes to our own sense of style, though, we don't want to stand out too much (in a bad way, anyway). That's why we love Gypsy Chic. From sassy to sophisticated, we can be ourselves without being "out there" or breaking the ol' piggy bank. Brought to Portland via owner Jamie Jensen through her friendship with a Thai Rasta who has mad tailoring skills, Gypsy Chic's signature style of colorful clothing permits our playful side to shine. Funky jewelry, hats, belts, and sunglasses complete the unique look, and our boyfriend can even get in on a good thing, with clothes for dudes, too.

If the sun's not going to shine, we may as well do it! Thanks to Gypsy Chic, we'll be more than ready to embrace dta wan when it does decide to show.

Thirty, Flirty & Thriving

We started dating a gent several years our junior, thus we’re suddenly hypersensitive to our “maturing” and have since amassed an arsenal of anti-aging face serums and creams, night balms and bases. So many, in fact, that we don’t know where to store them all. So they just sit in a bag on the floor of the bathroom. Classy.

Now all we need is even a single gray hair. Not saying she found one, Miss Kristenlee of Studio Thirty certainly eased our pain as we discussed “younger hair” versus “older hair” and how to meld the two with style. Even with a picture of Kate Moss in tow (What? We can try!), the hip hair artist and salon owner weighed what we wanted (sexy beach waves) versus what we didn’t (anything that required more than ten minutes of our time).

The result was spot on perfection, and we adored the combined collection of Alterna and Kevin Murphy products. It is safe to say that this swank new salon (open just 90 days) will beckon the upper-NE crowd—Cougs, 20-somethings, and all.

That Golden Glow

In grade school we had a babysitter who would slather her bikini-clad bod in Wesson oil and bake in the sun for hours, with her boyfriend’s initials cut out in duct tape and stuck on her belly. We thought that was awwwwsommmme. In high school, we pursued the deep dark tan via Coppertone. In college, we discovered tanning beds, and… well… let’s just say we regret all of it. Even the babysitter part. So we’ve opted to remain pasty white ever since.

Now tanning is not only safer, but smarter (seriously, the beds are so techy they’re straight out of sci-fi movies). Especially when you opt for the spray versions! With the VersaSpa at SunsUp Tanning Centers, you can get a gorgeously lifelike glow in just 45 seconds! (Fair-skinned? Go for the “clear”—it’s an amino acid that works with your skin so you turn out sun-kissed, not Tara Reid Orange.)

Mention Portland Picks (first-time visitors) to receive a Free Tan in a Super VIP bed at the Barbur Boulevard location! We promise to tell everyone you went to Hawaii.

Bite Me

You know when you eat something so good that you want to hide it from other people? We feel that way about the scones from Florio Bakery.

Locally made and ingeniously packaged for your freezer, these bites of heaven (scones and pain au chocolat) are just waiting for you to bake them up. Perfect for Mother’s Day brunch or as a decadent “just because” gift… if they ever make it out of your house! (Available at New Seasons, Food Front Co-op and Whole Foods.)

Listen Up

When you love all things local as much as we do, music is high on the list. And what could be cooler than listening to Portland artists on an MP3 player that is personalized by Portland artists?

The Zune Originals line now features etched designs by APAK, a Portland-based husband and wife team who celebrate the magic of life—and it’s so cool to have a personalized device with local flair—even if you’re listening to Kelly Clarkson. (We won’t tell.)

I Get Delirious

We have a bit of a hoarding problem when it comes to scented candles. What this leads to is a lot of clutter on the mantel.

But we can’t help adding one more—the gorgeously luxurious Scarlet Grapefruit candle from Delirium & Co. The scent is layered and rich—wafting ruby red grapefruit, red currants, apple, mandarin, jasmine and amber through the air—and the silvered glass it comes in looks absolutely glamorous on the mantel!
