life + style to you: every Friday
June 12th, 2009

Mother’s Day is the busiest restaurant day of the year, followed by Valentine’s Day. So why doesn’t Father’s Day get any love? After all, they’re 50% responsible for all of us being here. Maybe it’s because Dad is so darn modest about his “big day.” He might be uncomfortable with being showered with attention. Or maybe it’s just that we’re all so tuckered out from buying flowers and chocolates for Mom that we’re out of ideas when Father’s Day rolls around.

We’re here to help: Check out www.PortlandPicksforMen.com for some great gift ideas, and if you don’t find what you’re looking for, search the PPFM archives for even more clues to what dads might want—whether it’s a smoker for the backyard barbecues he’s famous for, or a quirky tie that inspires days of water-cooler conversation at the office.

Sweet on You

Growing up we were sweet on all sorts of things. First it was ponies, rainbows, and unicorns. Then candy. And then... boys.  One in particular, though, stands out from the crowd: Jake Russell. We were so sweet on him our teeth hurt. But alas, he dumped us for Amanda Snodgrass (really), and we moved on. That's when we turned to fashion.

We're not cheap, and we do want to look good (always), but times are tough. So who says we can't look great without going broke? Not Kate Dankowski, owner of Sweet Jayne, whose second location just opened on NW 23rd. Shop the latest styles of jeans, summer dresses, fabulous skirts, tops (for work and play), tailored jackets, and shoes (including cute summer sandals) from such designers as Tulle, White House Black Market, Ann Taylor, and various higher-end Nordstrom brands (to name a few). And get this: everything in the store (everything!) is $18 or less!

Sweet Jayne gets new weekly shipments of designer closeouts, samples, and overruns, and also carries an assortment of sweet jewelry, headbands, and purses. We’re smitten.

No More Singin’ the Blues

We recently sang the entire song “Maneater” to a sick friend to cheer her up. We’re not sure if it helped, but we often revert to the retro stylings of Hall & Oates to lift someone’s mood. When it comes to fashion, though, it’s all about now!

Happily, Aritzia came to town, so no more serenades. Music, art, design and fashion make everyone happy, and are at the heart of Aritizia. (They even feature up-and-coming artistic talents in the store, like photographer Yyellowbird—aka Cari Wayman—a young artist from Chicago.) Looking for designers? How about Acne, Cheap Monday, Community, Habitual, Loomstate, Mink Pink, Orion, Talula, TNA, 291, WESC, Wilfred, Central Park West, Mackage, Naked & Famous, and more. Denim? Try Current Elliott, Citizens of Humanity, 7 For All Mankind, Paige Premium Denim, Rock & Republic and J Brand.

Celebrate the opening this weekend and receive an adorable reusable neon tote bag with purchase; spend $100+ and receive a custom “Stila for Aritzia” makeup pack; enjoy opening sales on select merchandise; and free photo-booth photos!

Bite-sized Bliss

A friend of ours recently FB status'd that she had to use Epinephrine for the first time on her young'un. Luckily she had the “Shot of E” in her purse when the allergic-to-peanuts tot grabbed a Nutter Butter off a cookie platter and took a nibble. Scary!

Who can blame the kid, as we can’t resist the siren call for sweet treats either—especially when they’re from Two Tarts. With one bite we were seriously addicted to their Cappuccino Creams—espresso shortbread sandwiches filled with cinnamon buttercream—divine! Since then, we’ve tried them all—Chocolate-y Li’l Mamas, Marionberry Linzers, Chocolate Chip Fleur de Sels, and even the new piggy-shaped Bacon Cheddar Shortbread, to name a few. And because they’re just a bite (or two) we don’t feel (that) guilty if we buy a few for now… and a baker’s dozen for later… err, for a friend.

Stop in for their seasonal treats, like Rhubarb Rugala and zesty Lemon Shortbread Bars (as if you needed an excuse). We might start keeping a few tarts in our handbags—you know, for emergencies.

Knits that Fit

Knits—they shimmy over curves, wash well and need no ironing. And while we’ve yet to meet a knit that we don’t love, the vintage-inspired designs from Portland’s own Alyson Clair still kick it up a notch.

From flirty polka dots to dramatically angled collars, every piece adds a touch of va-va-voom to your wardrobe. What’s more, they come in sizes XS to XL, and Clair can accommodate others if needed. Figure flattering for all figures? Check ‘em out for yourself at Moxie and Pin Me Apparel.

Baby Loves Sunshine

There’s a mom who walks down our street every morning with her baby—and the poor little guy is totally covered in blankets. We’re not suggesting she expose him to the elements, but it might be easier if she protected him with sunscreen made just for him.

Substance Baby Natural Sunscreen is SPF 30, chemical-free, sweet-smelling, botanical-rich and in stock now at Maternitique.com! Zinc oxide protects baby from UVA/UVB rays, so it’s safe and gentle. No blankets necessary.

To Your Health

Veggies and fruits might not measure up to cake and cookies in our book, but we try hard to get in the recommended daily dose. And now there's a new way to make sure you're getting your "servings"... Produce Organic Beauty’s fresh-picked line of tasty products.

Sure, skincare might not be a substitute for healthy eating, but Apple Kiwi Eye Cream and Pomegranate Grapefruit Lip Balm make us feel good on the days when we’ve been remiss. And isn’t that healthy in itself?
