  PORTLAND PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
June 19th, 2009

We sweat a lot when we work out. It might be a glandular thing, or maybe from the Eastern European part of our background (and thanks, old-timey relatives, for the man hands and armpit fat, too). We went to the gym yesterday and got real sweaty, then walked two blocks to the grocery store for a few things. So when we went back to the gym to fetch our car (still sweating, btw), we got in the elevator with a perky—non-sweaty—girl in a gym polo shirt.

She asked us ever so nicely if we had a good workout. “It was real sweaty,” we replied. “In fact we just went to the store and we’re still sweating.” (Hello? Obvious?) But despite our snarkiness, you know what she said? She said, ever so nicely, “That means you’re still burning calories!” Yeah, right, perky girl. It just means we’re still sweaty.

Want to look good while you feel the burn? Forward this issue to 5 or more friends and CC picks@portlandpicks.com for your chance to win an adorable high-performance workout outfit from Mountain Hardwear—a Placement Halter Top and Ellinor Capri pants! See the Chick Pick below for more info!

Going Outside the Lines

How fortuitous (we love that word) it was that we decided to treat ourselves to Sin Ju one weekday lunch (we love their sashimi platter). Why was it fortuitous? It allowed us to discover that one of our favorite Pearl stores had moved!

Parallel is now right next to Sin Ju and across the street from Jamison Square Park. It’s just a few blocks over—but a world of change—from its previous location. In its swanky new space, Parallel puts great designs for men and women on display in an open, inviting space where you’ll find just what you need for an event, the office, or brunch with the girls. We loved the adorable, girly sweaters, and the trench coat styles for guys. The new store even smells delicious, thanks to candles from 88 Orange.

With new digs that are pretty much the epicenter of delight in the Pearl (you’ve got sushi, ice cream, coffee, shoes, eyewear, restaurants, and more fashion nearby), Parallel gives you a whole new reason to love the Pearl.

Every Day Should Be a Holiday

We took some friends wine tasting in the Willamette Valley last Memorial Day weekend. We found this company that picked us up and dropped us off at our front door, allowing us to taste as much as we wanted, worry-free. We had a blast, drank a lot of wine, and were in bed by 7:00 pm. (We’re lightweights.)

And since we didn’t want to spend this past Memorial Day weekend in bed, we played it a little bit easier at Wine Unwind. It’s the perfect place to spend a summer afternoon sampling flights, chatting with friends, nibbling on truffles and cheese. Its intimate atmosphere quietly fosters friendship and relaxation—and what more could we want on a summery, holiday weekend?

Wine Unwind offers up shelves of wine, each with a hand-written description. You can drink your bottle there with no corkage fee, or you can take it home. Wine Unwind also invites in local musicians, each one guaranteed to add to the relaxation you already feel from that glass of vino. Why go all the way to the Willamette Valley when you’ve got everything you need in your backyard?

Get Some Help

Many mornings, our closet makes us want to sigh—stuffed to the brim with clothes we just had to have—but why can’t we find anything to wear? Why do we have three turquoise belts, but no black purse? And why do only celebrities have personal stylists? Who can help us with this mess, but leave us with money left over for shopping?

At SPB Style Consulting, a woman with a (chic) vision aims to do just this. Stacy Pongracz-Bartha can whip a closet into shape and streamline a wardrobe based on individual’s taste and style in no time. At our consultation, she breezed in (looking amazing, of course) with pages of questions designed to highlight our fancies and areas of cluelessness. Her enthusiasm bubbled into our closet, where some clothes were earmarked for consignment, while others were refreshed by her spot-on eye for combination.

Stacy also specializes in personal shopping, closet organization and special-occasion dressing—she’s as versatile as our new, sleeker closet! Mention Portland Picks to receive a free one-hour consultation with Stacy, and bring on those fabulous mornings!

Run and Jump and Play

Finding the will to work out is one thing, but finding cute clothes to do it in is quite another. We have ugly old t-shirts from fun runs and ratty gym pants … not so inspiring when you wanna get physical.

So hooray for the Placement Halter Top and Ellinor Capri from local fave Mountain Hardwear. With high-performance fabrics and good looks, you’ll be a hit at the gym—or the supermarket. Enter to win the set (see intro!), or pick it up yourself at their Taylor Street store.

Pretty, I Feel Pretty

We know that we hit the girl-gene lottery because we’d never make it as boys. We couldn’t live without lip gloss, jewelry and four-inch heels.

And locally made Elizabeth Jewelry feeds our need for fashion in an affordable, adorable way. Our latest girly obsession is this pair of sparkly, goth-lite earrings, dubbed “Nights in Paris.” Indeed! The purple and pewter are so dramatic, adding a touch of glam to jeans and a tee or a cocktail dress. They’re everything a lady could love!

Rock On

Remember the Pet Rock? It just sat there, being a rock, and you were supposed to enjoy it. Huh. We didn’t get it. So we found another rock to brighten our day… one more useful, colorful, and refreshing.

It’s the SoapRock from T.S. Pink. They are actual soaps with bright scents, and they “melt” away into colorful patterns as you use them. With whole-herb extracts and vitamins and minerals from aquatic, botanical and mineral sources, they’re even good for your skin.

Artful Surprises at Williams-Sonoma Home

Williams-Sonoma Home showcases Portland resident Christopher Marley, a leading “bug artist” and author. He will be signing his latest book, “Pheromone: The Insect Artwork of Christopher Marley” at their 23rd Avenue location. We adore his vision of bugs—which are not our favorite topic. Marley takes exotic, colorful, kooky-looking insects and turns them into stylish objects of design.
