life + style to you: every Friday
June 26th, 2009

We are going old-school from now on—by using the phone. We just got charged 50 extra dollars this month for texting. Um, hello? And we are so cave-girl that we still have an actual Phone-phone with no Internet access. It’s one step up from the Jitterbug. Just punch in the big numbers and woohoo—ring ring!

But we’ve been rethinking the whole 3G thing. Maybe we’ll never download music or movies to our phone, but we might come out ahead if we stick to emailing our friends and not being charged 20 cents per text. (Friends—take note!) Or like we said, we could just call them. But who answers the phone these days? Truly, it’s so passé.

Call, text or smoke-signal your friends for this one! Forward this issue to 5 or more friends and CC picks@portlandpicks.com. You’ll be entered to win a pair of free tickets to Rooftop Cinema! (See the Hip Happenings for more details.)

New in Town?

We love all of Portland, but we’re especially fond of the Nob Hill area. We’ve tried living other places, but try as we might, we just keep moving back to NH. We love the buzz, the restaurants and the shopping, of course.

So when we discovered that Idom (one of our favorite boutiques) just up and moved into our hood, we were ecstatic. Ec. Static. We had to run (not walk—run!) down to check out the new digs. And the new digs are awesome. Bright and friendly, warm and welcome—all the things the Idom is known for. Most of all though, there is more space now, which means more room in which to display Idom’s fashion-forward new designs. Which means more things for us to buy. Which means we’re in heaven!

Mark your calendar for Idom’s Grand Opening Soiree on Monday, June 29, from 6–8 p.m. Not only will the event offer up discounts on new summer merch, but one lucky attendee will win a private shopping experience with Idom’s owner and head fashionista, Modi Soondarotok. Get yourself there!

The Face of Beauty

When we last saw one of our favorite beauty gods, he was in the Pearl outskirts. While we quite liked his cozy digs, filled to bursting with goodies from all over, we sometimes feared we’d knock a fragrance bottle over, run headfirst into an outstretched lipstick tube, or—gasp—overlook a product that was perfect for us.

Happily, Fez Studio has moved to a gorgeous, open and airy spot where we can’t help but linger over professional-grade products like Murad, Kinerase, Borghese, and Kevyn Aucoin. If you’ve seen it in Lucky or Allure, you’ll see it at Fez. (Vegans will love the Lotus Love Beauty line, all natural herbal and floral beauty accoutrements.) Want to take over the store and play with makeup for a girl’s night? He’ll hook you up! It’s like an awesome beauty bazaar!

All this sound intimidating? Puh-leaze. In addition to being a professional makeup artist and esthetician, Fez is truly one of the nicest guys we know. He’ll make you gorgeous and keep you laughing all the while. Because happiness is hot.

One For You, One For Me.

An older sister is both a blessing and a curse. While growing up, sharing was almost as painful as BF break-ups, and we were always envious of her stuff—be it nail polish, earrings or the same Frankie Goes to Hollywood T-shirt. But now we’re 30-something and we love her “like a sister,” having grown out of her shadow and adopted our own style.

When she’s not in town, we sneak off to Una, a tiny hideout of distinctive pieces not found in any other local boutiques—apparel hand-picked from Europe, NY, LA and San Francisco. Peruse the racks of this walk-in closet for unique dresses and tops in high-quality fabrics, summer-weight sweaters and scarves, and jewelry for the perfect accent. We found delicate fine-gauge knit dresses from France and adorable crinkly cotton dresses, versatile enough for warm-weather romping or alfresco wine-sipping.

While we may only be able to splurge here once in a while, we love knowing we’ll have something Big Sis would covet. Maybe we’ll tell her about Una. Of course, then we’d be very open to sharing.

Hot Hot Hot!

As jewelry junkies, we look to accessories for instant happiness. There’s sex appeal in earrings, we swear. And when we find something as striking as a slinky bracelet, well… it’s better than a new boyfriend.

Right now pedX on Alberta has amazing Liquid Metal bracelets from Sergio Gutierrez, so we had to pick one up. We love the way they hug the wrist and go with, well… everything! Get yours today and check out their jewelry (and bags and shoes!) p.s. Become a fan on Facebook!

Buh-Bye Billboards

We’re not fans of ginormous billboards polluting nature’s majesty or blocking architecture. Especially when half of the ads are attempting to lure us to buy fast food or switch banks. We get enough of that on TV.

Enter Drive by Bags, an innovative design team that’s determined to conquer the big-boards-of-ugly one bag at a time. They transform billboard ads into one-of-a-kind handbags that are mini works of pop-culture art. They’re cute and functional—which makes them earth-friendly and cool.

Speaking of Jewelry…

We were on a hunt to get some family pieces restored and have a custom ring made. But the prices we were quoted for the work—wow—super wow. We almost gave up until someone pointed us toward Beth from Studio Acorn.

In her tiny downtown studio, Beth does custom pieces, fine-jewelry repair, and even has her own line of baubles. And her prices are amazing. Our entire order cost one-fifth the price of the “cheapest” quote for one ring!
