life + style to you: every Friday

July 3rd, 2009
Here’s what we remember from last year’s Fourth of July: the sound of barking dogs and gunshot-like explosions, and the extreme paranoia that the neighbors’ revelry with illegal fireworks would burn our house down. Hooray?
While everyone else is enjoying barbecues and beers, we’re staking out the street from our living-room window—hose at the ready just outside—hoping with every fiber of our being that the incendiary celebration across the street ends by 2 a.m.
Whether you’re carousing with friends or frantically wetting down your fence tomorrow, call some gal-pals and invite them to a pool party for next week! Then forward this issue to 5 or more friends and CC picks@portlandpicks.com for your chance to win an epically adorable totally functional oversized tote from Merin Designs. We’re Sew in Love!
We love the idea of sustainable living—working from home, growing our own food (fertilized with our own compost), dazzling palates with our “Top Chef” cooking skills, and sewing our own “Project Runway” outfits. Yeah. As if. Besides—who has the time?
Last week, while rushing home from the office and picking up take-out, we spotted Makool Loves You at The Ford Building. The new studio-boutique showcases lovely apparel that’s both modern and vintage, with a romantic flair. Shop owner, designer and seamstress, Anisa, cites Copenhagen and Denmark as the inspiration for her organic cotton dresses, skirts and tops—each with thoughtful details like cascading ruffles, big buttons and playful pockets. Even her adorable hobo satchels have signature secret pockets. We were smitten by her sweet underthings pieced by hand from reclaimed textiles and trims. And because she uses end-of-mill fabrics almost exclusively, each piece is a limited edition.
MLY also carries screen-printed tea towels, citrus-scented bath products, unique jewelry and the hand-drawn musings of Argentine artist, Irana Douer, on super-soft tees and exquisite cup & saucer sets. Sew much to love!

Ride On
When we were kids, summer was all about freedom. Freedom to spend hours playing outside. Freedom to ride bikes all over the neighborhood, chasing the ice-cream truck. Freedom to sit idly doing our girlfriend's hair. Now that we're all grown up (ahem, sort of), some of those freedoms are no more, what with having to work and all. But we're not ready to give up all our freedom.
So how excited were we when The eBike Store moved into north Portland? These little electric-battery beauties will get us from point A to point B (hills and all), without even breakin' a sweat. We still have to pedal (come on, we aren't that lame), but with a super cool motorized bicycle from brands like Schwinn, eZee, and Torker, we get the little extra oomph needed to keep us going. The eBike Store also carries much-needed accessories like reflective vests, water bottles, and ultra-secure locks, and soon it'll offer repair classes. (A girl's gotta be prepared!)
Ah, the wind in our hair, without all the work. Go on—pedal on with your bad selves, ladies!

The Beauty Shop
One of our favorite childhood things to do was accompany our grandmother to “the beauty parlor.” We can still see the wall of dryers, the ladies sitting under them like bird hatchlings. The women cackled, the dryers whirred, and the scent of perm wafted through the air.
In the present day, we find ourselves somewhere a bit less fusty, but no less fun: The Parlour. The Parlor uses all cruelty-free products, emphasizing local and vegetarian. Whenever we get highlights, we worry about all that foil—no worries, they recycle. It’s a cool space, with a garage door that opens and lets the fresh air in, so no choking salon smells.
They offer haircuts and color services for men and women, and on the second floor is a tattoo parlor. They’re open every day—great for those of us who keep long hours. Walk-ins are welcome, and if you’ve got a big night planned and feel like gettin’ all gussied, they’ll hook you up too. We’ve no doubt our grandmother is looking down and smiling.

Tote-ally Awesome
We are always lugging stuff somewhere. Whether it’s towels and snacks for a day trip to the coast, overnight clothes for the kidlets’ play dates, or loads of laundry to the dry cleaner, there just aren’t bags big enough.
Merin Designs’ tough-but-chic Seattle-made totes totally fit the bill. They’re oversized, colorful, and have interior pockets and waterproof-fabric bottoms (perfect for the boat or the pool). You can even choose your color based on neighborhoods! (We heart “Laurelhurst” the most!)

This and That
As young girls we had a flair for the artistic. We decorated our notebooks with doodles, made our own jewelry, bedazzled our Keds, and harbored a slight obsession with macramé, so it’s no wonder that the spot-on hodge-podgery found at Stella and Hodge has us completely smitten.
This crafty Minneapolis designer offers a bevy of must-have baubles, pretty paper products emblazoned with pops of color, and kitschy-cool custom silhouette prints that remind us of our wonder years.

Oh, Snap!
How do we put this delicately… can people please slow down on the overdone ‘graphic tee’ look? Sure it’s cute, comfy, and colorful. But we are ready for some variety… for the next step in artsy, cool tees.
We are ready for Eric Prowell’s photography/t-shirt project, suitably named “Oh, Snap!” Grab a couple of truly unique tees, available in just a few stores around the U.S. and in Japan. Lucky for our neon-laser-neon-graphic-tee sore eyes, they’re online too!
