life + style to you: every Friday
September 11th, 2009

We just read the best thing ever:  “I'd like to know who coined the phrase, ‘All good things must come to an end,’ so I can punch them in the face.” So true! Good things aren’t supposed to come to an end, they’re supposed to go on an on forever. Or until you get righteously sick of them. (So… huh. That’s pretty much an “end”… but we digress.)

In any case, we are all about riding the “good thing” train as long as it lasts. Whether it’s eating our favorite meal over and over at the same restaurant, toting around a favorite handbag until the straps fall off, or dating someone we’re having a blast with well past the point of knowing he’s not “The One,” we just can’t stop ourselves.

Drop us a line… let us know about the good things in your life. Enquiring minds want to know!

Too Cool for School

It takes a lot of work to be fashionable. Oh, we try to make it look effortless, but, hello. The endless shopping excursions to find the perfect summer dress. The tireless search for just the right fall boots. The hunt for matching accessories to complete a look. Wait—we love these things!

We also love it when the little fashionistas in our lives are rockin' the latest styles. With Kids Edge on the scene, generic is out and unique is in. Carrying brands like People's Republic of Portland, Knuckleheads, Trusty Sidekick, DKNY, and Diesel (for infants through middle-school age), Kids Edge puts the “rock” in rock star with super-stylish clothes, accessories, and jewelry. You'll also find "gently used" brand-name items, including shoes—good for the wallet and the planet.

If you're like us—the type to run far away from onesies with sayings like "Too Cute for Words" or "Mommy's Little Helper"—you'll love Kids Edge. While being hip may be a state of mind, looking hip is where it's at, no matter what your age. May as well start ’em young!

Top it Off

A friend came to visit earlier this year and we were astonished to watch our husband whisk her husband away from our shopping spree and into a bar to watch the Kentucky Derby. Surely this was not to imply that our spree o’glee was not enjoyable to them? Sadly, however, three hours later we were shopped out (yes, it’s possible) and they were still sitting at a bar—having the time of their lives.

We downright refuse to be left out next year. We have vowed that we’re not only joining them at their little Derby party, but we will also be perfectly accessorized in a gorgeous lid from CrowingLori Hats. Custom-made or off the shelf, we know that CrowningLori will send us to our soiree in style—and undoubtedly we’ll be the envy of every lady there.

We’re quite thrilled that CrowningLori is not just about the Derby, but also the Pillbox, Cowgirl and Red hats, too! Think back on your dress-up collection from being a little girl, but this time it’s totally serious—flowers, feathers, frills, you name it. Look for us at next year’s Kentucky Derby parties—we’ll be the fabulous ones!

Beauty Call

We’ve all regretted embarrassing shags and experimented with woeful bangs. Messed around with the common Bob and pinned a few Bobbys. Being experimental isn’t such a bad thing, but all that stripping, teasing and blowing takes a toll on our hair.

Luckily, we can put our naughty ways to rest because we’ve met someone special—Chachi. He’s worked the runways in NYC and the celebs in LA, specializing in hair extensions, fashion-forward styles and couture cuts and color. Best of all, he’s just opened Portland’s new “it” salon. Uber-chic in a revamped warehouse, Chachi Hair Skin is a mix of concrete, white leather, catchy tunes, fun people and talent galore. Hair gurus Chachi and Josiah work magic to transform drab, dull ‘dos into haute-couture hair. Shannon, esteemed esthetician, whips skin into shape with lavish potions by Sonya Dakar. And Lori, master makeup artist,  polishes off the look with glam lashes and kiss-me lips. The finished product: a glowing new you guaranteed to turn heads.

Now that’s our idea of a beauty call.

  Cocktail Spot of the Week:

The Driftwood Room
The Driftwood Room Portland Oregon Hotel Deluxe

With every episode of “Mad Men” we watch, the urge to drink at work increases. Too bad that doesn’t fly anymore. Next best thing? An après-work cocktail at the Driftwood Room in the Hotel deLuxe. With its swank interior and romantic, flattering lighting, it’s the ultimate place to bat your falsies coquettishly over cocktails like the “Cary Grant” (Buffalo Trace Bourbon, Navau vanilla cognac and orange bitters) or the “Elizabeth Taylor” (crème de violette and champagne!) and pretend your software-engineer boyfriend is really Don Draper.

Get Your Drink On

Every once in a while we stumble upon something that we totally want but don’t necessarily need—and no, shoes, jeans, and cocktails don’t count. Such is the case with the cool parrot corkscrews at Abitare that make us want to say need-schmeed!

Available in two punchy colors, these little cuties are modern, sleek, and infused with a healthy dose of funky style, making them the perfect addition to any hip chick’s bar set.

Butter Me Up

We live for those few products that are complete and total fix-alls like the Butter Bars from =Seattle-based company My Birch.

This super-moisturizing lotion bar can be used instead of messy lotion; you can cut off a sliver and let it melt in your bath, massage your cuticles with it to soften them; even use it as a drawer sachet. We are pretty sure there are more uses—and we intend to find them! Hard work… we know.

Those Amazing Animals
Our childhood tea parties were not your conventional Cabbage Patch Kid soiree; instead, we invited punk rock Strawberry Shortcake with a mohawk and a fishnet dress, or our stuffed monkey with a beehive wig and a DIY Victorian ball gown made from cheesecloth.

We have a weak spot for uncommon interpretations of the ordinary, especially when it comes to our beloved pets. Phoenix-based artist Laurel Morley is brilliant, offering original paintings of your furry friends in Elizabethan or Renaissance costumes. Check out her online shop for a taste of her amazing talent!
