life + style to you: every Friday
October 9th, 2009

The time has come once again—it’s Fashion Week. We hope you’ve hit at least one night so far, but don’t fret if you haven’t—it goes on til Sunday! Our biggest concern this year—other than deciding which talents to check out on which night—is what to wear.

Right now we are gearing up for tonight’s fabulosity and considering either glamming it up with a slinky dress, patterned tights and boots, or going low-key/NYC in dark jeans, 6-inch stilettos and a black blazer. With ginormous jewelry, natch. So what have you been wearing to Fashion Week? We’re dying to know—we get our best inspiration from our friends’ outfits, after all.

Even if you’d rather stay home in your jammies, watch “Glee” on DVR and order a pizza, go ahead and forward this issue to 5 or more friends and CC picks@portlandpicks.com. You could win one of 2 $25 lunch gift certificates to Mama Mia Trattoria! Mangia bene, Fashionistas!

Turn Over a New…

We just had the most chaotic two weeks of our lives. Our dog nearly died and had a multi-thousand-dollar emergency surgery, our Hubby came and went on business twice, and then we took a visit to our hometown for some good old-fashioned family time. To top that off, we’re selling our condo and feeling sick-ish. We’re worn out and in desperate need of an escape.

It was an escape we found at NW Portland’s new gift, toy and card store, Leaf PDX. Leaf offers something totally different from anything we’ve encountered in Portland, specializing in unique laser-cut products that can be custom designed for your needs—business or personal. Leaf was packed with super cool greeting cards, paper-made children’s toys (think dollhouses, dollhouse furniture, paper dolls, etc.) and pretty, precisely designed lamp covers.

Why an escape, you ask? Well, Leaf was such a departure from our everyday lives that we were (temporarily) able to forget that we were in recovery—and promptly felt less sick and almost gleeful! Need an escape of your own? Check out Leaf!

Skin and the City

We’re told to take time for ourselves. You know—slow down, relax. Between 60-hour work weeks, board meetings, girls’ nights, book clubs, date nights and workouts, we barely have time to think the word “relax,” never mind add it to the long list of to-dos.
But we’re reevaluating our priorities. And we think you will too after you experience Haven.

This holistic skincare studio is the brainchild of Erin McGovern, former Nike trend analyst whose lifelong obsession with health and beauty sparked the creation of our new favorite pamper getaway. Escape reality with Haven’s lavish, hydration-drenching facials, complete with aromatherapy and food-grade organic products. Or opt for a power nap (yes, you read that right)—30 or 45 minutes of an intoxicating shoulder, neck and scalp massage that’s sure to send you drifting into dreamland.

Whether it’s brow design, lash tinting, a hot-oil scalp treatment or a restorative facial, Erin’s awareness, touch and passion creates a divine experience that will leave you refreshed, revived and ready to take on the world. With much better skin, of course.

The “Vacationer’s” Vacation

We take vacations seriously, since we take them so rarely. Our main escape is an overnighter in Seattle or shacking up for a weekend in a local hotel… but sometimes we need the beach. We need the open skies, the crashing waves, the sand between our toesies. It’s primal—and it’s restorative.

So we are thrilled to book our rooms at the Ocean Lodge for the Stormy Weather Arts Festival in Cannon Beach. Happening Nov. 6–8, it will be a weekend of leisure—highlighted by art, music (Linda Hornbuckle at the Coaster Theater!), cuisine, photography and more. We are sooooo excited. Especially because the Ocean Lodge will host a special reception on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 4–6 pm, featuring nature photographer Phil Knouf and painter Leah Anderson. Refreshments, live guitar by Kit Garoutte… and the beach. Ahh, the beach!

Book your Ocean Lodge rooms now—from $169 to $269, 2-night minimum. You need to get away, don’t you? Plus, mention Portland Picks when booking for the Stormy Weather Arts Festival, and receive a 10% discount off lodging!

  Cocktail of the Week:

Too cold for porch-poured cocktails, but still want a neighborly vibe when you imbibe? Try Vindalho’s new fall cocktails: the Aqua Club (aquavit, orange bitters, lime), Traveler (spiced run, tuaca, ginger ale), and Tamarind Sour (bourbon, tamarind, lime). Appetites piqued? The Happy Hour menu delivers goodies like lamb meatballs, delicious chutneys, crunchy and spiced string beans, and marvelous curried mussels. With Vindalho’s seasonal drink and food menus, we’re happy to heat up this winter.

Right on Time

We once had a houseguest who stomped his muddy boots off on our newly mopped floor, and then proceeded to leave sweaty beverage rings on every surface in reach.

After that experience we hung up a “remove shoes” sign and stocked up on cute coasters at 12fifteen. This hip letterpress is pumping out prints we love in a bevy of cool designs and colors that will perfectly protect our furniture in style.

Finally—a Guidebook to Wine Country!

We live right off the 99, but we’ve never explored Oregon wine country. Yep. We kind of can’t believe it, either. But frankly we’re overwhelmed by the options and don’t know where to begin.

So hooray for the Wine Country Guidebook! Now we can read important details about 200+ wineries in Oregon, including maps, the hours they’re open, tasting fees, which wines they produce, and even what the view is like and if they serve food. Bottoms up!

All Grown Up

Our birthday is still a couple of months away, but naturally, we’ve already started planning this year’s festivities. This time around, we’re feeling the idea of turning kid party ideas into adult fun (we promise, that’s not as dirty as it sounds).

The first thing on the list is one of the disco-ball inspired Confetti System piñatas. Filled with handmade confetti, it’s sparkly and girly, and we can’t wait to twirl under the falling confetti like the princesses that we are.
