June 11, 2010
We have had Just About Enough of certain people mocking our appreciation of Lifetime Movies. We get it—we know they’re ridiculous—but so what if we immediately switch on Lifetime in hotel rooms—it’s either that or the yoga channel, so we’re going with completely implausible Valerie Bertinelli dramas over skinny vegetarians doing downward dogs, ’kay?
And so what if we watch them on weekends, when we should be out doing stuff? Sometimes we must tune in… especially if the movie stars Soleil Moon Frye, Sarah Chalke and Markie Post and it’s about New England high-school students who think they’re cursed by a witch. (Did you see it??? It was called “I’ve Been Waiting for You.” So genius.)
We’re still cool—no matter what our Secret Shame is. Check out this rad giveaway: Forward this issue to 5 friends and CC picks@portlandpicks.com, and you’ll be entered to win an eco-friendly Saky Sacks bag! See the Chick Pick below for more deets! |

Golden Girl
Our grandmother spoiled us rotten. Not just with love, but with shopping trips to the mall. She would spend hours watching us pick out slap bracelets and Keds, ready to buy anything that grabbed our attention. She was like our Goddess of Shopping, and we likely have her to thank for our grown-up retail addiction.
And our resolve has been stretched to the limit with the opening of NE Portland’s newest boutique, Golden. Intimate and cute, Golden is stocked full of hot summer fashions that beg to be worn and adored. Everything was spot-on without being uber-trendy—perfect for everyday life and on-the-go needs. We found flirty dresses (just in case we dance on a cruise ship) and fun tops (for a hot date here in town). And their well-edited selection of scarves and jewelry ensures that we’ll always have the hippest finishing touch.
Though our tastes have changed a bit since our days of shopping with Grandma, we found that our Inner Goddess of Shopping is quite savvy and sophisticated. And Golden just may be our new go-to.

Blissed Out
We can’t help it—we’ve been obsessed with 60s-inspired hairdos ever since “Mad Men” came on the scene. And since we’re basically useless when it comes to doing anything more to our hair than getting it up in a ponytail, we have to seek professional help for big occasions—everything from girls’ nights out to first dates to job interviews.
So who's on our speed-dial? It’s Bliss Salon and Spa. Their new digs on Division are laid-back and yet totally plush, and they do everything from cuts and color (using Goldwell colors, and they’re an exclusive Bumble & Bumble salon) to up-dos (vintage or modern), waxing, massage, makeup, skincare (using Dermalogica products) and manis/pedis. It’s basically your one-stop spot for everything pampering. (Hint, hint, brides-to-be!)
So the next time you need a little pick-me-up or an up-do, make an appointment at Bliss. They can indulge your vintage-inspired fantasies or keep it super modern—either way you’ll love your new look. And thank goodness Jon Hamm isn’t on their treatment menu… we might never leave! Mention Portland Picks for 10% off your service!

Ready to Change Your Life?
If you stay up late enough (as we do), you get to see a lot of informercials for exercise videos. Caribbean dance, stripper poles, Marine-worthy gut-busting workouts… they all seem either too lame or too intense.
Which is where Fierce Fitness comes in—they give you dedicated, attentive, personalized support on everything from your form to your daily nutrition, and the camaraderie among fellow members is absolutely tremendous. Plus, as the only kickboxing boot camp in Portland, they combine a really fun, always changing workout with cardio, strength training, endurance training and self-defense techniques. So you can achieve positive changes through weight-loss and improved health, and you can kick some ass, too! (So empowering!)
The best part? You don’t have to do it alone. Your instructors and fellow boot-campers are there to give you encouragement, and as you see the physical changes, the fire in your belly will burn even hotter. Fierce Fitness Kickboxing Boot Camp provides the tools and the motivation to change your life! Mention Portland Picks for 10% off!

Rethink Your Ink
For a while now, we’ve been thinking of getting a second tattoo… one of those 1940s “Sailor Jerry” hearts. But instead of reading “Mom,” it will read “Pork Chop,” after one of our Pugs. Too weird?
Maybe we’ll do something less permanent, like snapping up a few of these “Tattoo” tiles from modwalls. They’d be sooo cute as a sink backsplash in the bathroom. Or maybe we’ll frame a mirror with them and hang it in the guest room. Ahoy!

Bag Lady
We can schlep with the best of them, but nothing cramps our style like a tacky take-along bag. As local style icons (Oh haaa! We so wish! But we digress.), we feel like we need to represent, even when we’re loading up at TJ’s.
Our newest fixation? The funky/functional/foldable bags by Saky Sacks. The prints are totally of-the-moment, and they can easily carry up to 25 pounds of whatever you’re lugging around.

Here Comes the Sun
Just because it’s June-uary doesn’t mean you can’t bring a little sunshine into your home. We’re big fans of soy candles to do just that. A little glow + a little aromatherapy = a lot of happy. They’re perfectly genius for improving our mood.
These gorgeous hand-poured candles by Sydney Hale look chic and smell ah-may-zing. We’re thinking of stocking up to give as gifts if this crappy weather sticks around. Or maybe we’ll just hoard them for ourselves!

Shwood Eyewear
What’s the best way to look like a local? It’s not by riding a fixie—it’s by sporting a cool pair of eco-friendly specs. And nobody does it like local outfit Shwood Eyewear. Their frames are made from sustainably-harvested wood—yes, wood!—and available in Maple, East Indian Rosewood, or Zebrawood. Best part? They start at just $95, so you’ll have enough leftover cheese to become a regular at that intimidating hipster coffee shop…
