life + style to you: every Friday
July 2, 2010

We did it—we wore flip flops five days in a row. And it was spectacular. Swell. Smarvelous. We even sprang for a hot-orange pedicure (it positively glows, in a “Weird Science” kinda way) and a spray tan to boot. Woot!

We’re gonna squeeze every darn drop of enjoyment out of living under the sun—because dangit, we’ve waited long enough. (Did you see our Summer Essentials Guide, btw? Lots of good ideas there!) So anyhoo, grab a good book, slather on the SPF, and stick those pasty legs out for the world to see, because it’ll be fall in like… oh… three weeks or so.

Bonus! Forward this issue to 5 friends & CC picks@portlandpicks.com for your chance to win a $25 Gift Certificate to Moxie! Check out the Hip Happenings below for info about their 5-year anniversary, and bring your man, too. They have hip & affordable menswear, don’cha know.

Cool Like That

We had a friend in college who inherited her mom’s entire collection of concert t-shirts.  Our personal favorite, a vintage 1970’s ¾-sleeve Willie Nelson hand-me-down, was pretty much the coolest thing ever, and we spent many an hour wishing that it was ours.

It’s too bad that back in those days we didn’t have a place to go like Palace, a gem of a shop filled with new and vintage clothing, arranged on the racks by style and color, no less. (So sensible!) Palace is filled with pieces you always wished were yours: soft and worn-in boyfriend tees, high-waisted shorts, three-button blazers, and flowy, vintage dresses. Add to that an impressive collection of vinyl records, retro luggage, handmade jewelry and knee socks, and the pieces at Palace will make you feel like the coolest queen around (or king, as there is plenty to pick from for men, too).

We’re so happy we found Palace. Next time we lust after that perfectly worn-in v-neck, we know exactly where to find it.

One Life to Live

How fabulous would it be if we were immortal? Not in a brooding-pasty-white vampire way; more like a snakes-for-hair Medusa way. Wait, didn't she get beheaded? Huh. Maybe someone more like Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom. (Who couldn't use a little ever-lasting wisdom?)

We know something else we could use a little more of: Pie. Sweet or savory delish pies are made daily (meat, veggie, and gluten-free options!) at the newest addition to the SE Stark Street phenom, Immortal Pie and Larder. With a boutique marketplace feel, Immortal Pie and Larder keeps us stocked with all the essential pantry sundries. We'll take some imported and local wines and beers, please. And cheeses, crackers, almonds, a variety of salts and spices, olive oils, dried pastas, cocktail "enhancements," and of course all kinds of chocolate—everything we could possibly need to throw a swanky party or create a delectable dinner for two. Immortal Pie and Larder even carries a bevy of vintage-style beer glasses and various other gifty items.

Immortal bliss might be nice, but for now we’ll take keeping our belly (and pantry) well-stocked.

Nerd Alert!

In elementary school there were three events that rocked our world: the monthly Scholastic book order, the annual school book fair, and the summer library. We’ll say it loud. We’ll say it proud. We were (and still are) total book nerds. We have hundreds of them; some we’ve read, some we haven’t. We love them all just the same.

Naturally, we were uber excited to see Monograph Bookwerks set up shop on NE Alberta. Monograph specializes in art, design and architecture books of the new and vintage varieties. They’ve got hundreds to choose from; even the most discerning collector will find a choice title worth owning in this literary treasure chest. Are you a collector with too many in your collection? Monograph will buy your books for resale!

Too, they stock a pleasing array of fine-arts goods like pottery and vintage-book-related trinkets. And as uber book nerds, this store appeals to us just like those three book-y events from elementary school did… but we think anyone would have a good time perusing the shelves at Monograph Bookwerks. In fact, we think it would be hard to not have a good time!

Pretty and Practical

If you’ve been reading Portland Picks long enough, you know that our Shopping Jones extends way past our closets. We’re majorly addicted to feathering our nests, as well.

And these absolutely charming throw pillows from Anna Joyce are absolutely poking our eyes out! (In a good way.) Handmade from new and vintage cottons, these playful pillows are the perfect pop to make our sofas sing. (Pick one up at Noun, or shop Anna Joyce online!)

The “Go-Without” Pout

We are all about going organic—from lentils and limes to linens, liquor and laundry detergent, we’re just about as eco-friendly as you can get. The one area we haven’t really gone organic in, however, is our makeup.

But hooray! We just found these organic lip glosses by Afterglow, and they have everything our greenie hearts desire: flirty colors, incredible shine, long-wearing results, no “sticky” gloopiness, and nothing—zip/zilch/nada—that offends Mother Earth.

Elixir of Life

We exercise, eat right and sleep enough, but energy still eludes us. We even get in our eight daily glasses of H2O. We need an edge. What could that missing edge be? Enter: The Big Pitcher.

Fact: beauty, youthfulness and health depend on oxygen. With The Big Pitcher, you get more oxygen with every sip of agua. Super refreshing and healthy, it tastes waaay better than tap, and after only a few days of drinking oxygen-rich water, we felt more energized.

EPMartin Watches

What a fabulous watch! We almost couldn’t believe that EPMartin makes their home in Portland. They’re focused on styles for guys, but we’re all about rocking the menswear. (It adds a jolt of bad-a*s sass to any outfit.) And it just so happens that these are exceptional timepieces—made with Swiss movements and Italian-leather straps—and each one has a story behind it. (The “Sahara” style, pictured, is based on designs from the Cold War.) Very chic.
