July 23, 2010
Do you ever do something that you know is a dumb idea, but you do it anyway? The other day we picked up an old ceiling fan, and the very moment we put our hands on it, the thought bubbled up: “Bad. Bad idea. Bad.” And then it happened: we split a finger open on the broken glass of the fan light.
As soon as we touched it, we knew we’d get cut. Yet still that finger met that broken glass, as if it was meant to be. And the worst part? We were convinced we needed stitches, but everyone we showed our booboo to just said, “Get a band-aid.” Party poops. Doesn’t anyone have any sympathy? Sigh.
Here’s something that’s always a good idea: Forward this issue to 5 friends and CC picks@portlandpicks.com, and you’ll be entered to win a trio of fabulous sidlab hair couture products: haute 1, haute 2, and haute 3. See the Chick Picks below for more info! |

Let Us Count the Ways…
Sometimes it is oh-so-difficult to properly express how much we love a place in only 175 words. So please bear with us as we jam-pack the following paragraph with as many love-fest inducing adjectives as possible.
Switch Shoes, located in Multnomah Village, has an inventory of shoes, clothing and accessories that had us teary-eyed with joy. We drooled over bright summer sandals and fawned about the funky belts, jewelry and fantastic assembly of hats, wallets and bags. Lucky for us, Switch Shoes recently doubled in size, now carrying dresses, blouses, and other lust-worthy clothing. Switch’s inventory is unique and stylish, much of it ordered from Israel and made exclusively for the store. We walked away with the.most.amazing brown boots that zip up the side and lace up the front and oh.my.god we want to take them out to dinner. We also scored a white cotton blouse embedded with a sweet fabric flower. Sigh.
We’ve never had a better time sending our paycheck off into the sunset. See you again soon, Switch.

A Sweet Treat
We’re “grown-ups” but we still love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. We think there is a genius to PB&J … it’s like the perfect combination—nutty, creamy peanut butter + sweet, sweet sugary jelly and bread .. are there three foods/condiments we enjoy more? We think not.
Speaking of perfect combinations, SE boutique darling, Local 35, recently partnered with Spin Magazine and the Ford Fiesta Lounge to bring PDX a temporary “boutique plus.” Not only does the aptly named Portland Pop Up have super cool fashions a la Local 35, but Spin Magazine sponsors music shows in the space on Friday evenings. And we were tickled pink by the quirky Ford Fiesta photo booth, guaranteed to entertain even the most annoyed husband-shopper. (See? Shopping + husband entertainment = perfect combination!)
But move your derriere if you want to shop this pop up shop; Portland Pop Up will only be in PDX through the end of August, and then it moves on to another city. Now if only they served PB&J…

Can You Keep a Secret?
When we younger, “The Great Gatsby” was required reading, but we happily devoured it. And since then, we’ve been fascinated with the roaring twenties—the jazz and dancing and anything-is-possible attitude.
When we stepped into Secret Society, we felt like we’d walked into a twenties-era speakeasy. The lounge is a dark and intimate candle-lit space with mahogany bookshelves and red walls. We asked the bartender about the rumored secret drinks and were delighted when the Bee’s Knees was delivered to us as a Killer Bee (add tequila, and oh so delicious). Down the hall, a band was booming in the Secret Society ballroom, the former meeting hall for The Woodmen of the World, and now a venue for live music each weekend—and for free! (Bonus!)
We left the Secret Society inspired to do something old-timey like swoon, or make moonshine in our basement. We’ll be back soon to order one of those secret drinks, then dance the night away in a fashion that would make Gatsby proud.

Note to Self
Whenever we get a supercute card in the mail, we can’t bring ourselves to part with it. We’ll tape it to the fridge, or pin it on the office corkboard. If it’s something very special, maybe we’ll even frame it!
Hadley Hutton’s cards are absolutely worth framing. We love her girly take on birds and botanicals, the front and back designs, and the dreamy color-washed backgrounds. Pick up a few to send, but save one for yourself as a tiny piece of local-art heaven.

Love is in the Hair
Not quite curly, not quite straight, our locks are mostly a mess. When attempting loose curls, we can’t achieve the carefree, beachy waves thing—we look more like charter members of the Def Leppard fan club. So we stick with straight.
Happily, sidlab haircouture’s “haute” Smoothing System makes it easy to be fabulous—no straightening iron required. It’s gorgeous haircare: paraben- and sodium laureth sulfate-free, and it’s made in Portland. Luscious and local? Yes, please.

Summer Transformation
When you’re tired of knocking yourself out for better health, it’s time to call Therapy. Their FDA-approved biofeedback device for allergy elimination, dynamic health improvement, and comprehensive nutritional evaluation can change your life.
His patients love it! “Dr. Kevin’s program is beyond just a diet. Sure, I’ve lost 40 pounds, but to have my IBS and chronic back pain disappear has been nothing short of a miracle! I tell everyone I know (that) you have to try the BAX 3000!” Your first visit is $67. (Normally $150!)

Spudka Vodka
Like Magpies, we are attracted to shiny things. And since we’re semi-pro shoppers, a good label can also turn our heads. So when we spotted a bottle of Spudka Vodka, it was a given—this bad-boy was coming home with us. And Spudka didn’t disappoint. A true potato vodka (made with Idaho taters and pure spring water from Mt. Hood, courtesy of Hood River Distillers) it’s one of the best we’ve sipped. Ferreals.
