August 6, 2010
We are officially welcoming the return of fall fashion. Maybe not so much the shooties and shabooties, but definitely the return of distressed denim, military-inspired separates, and cozy, billowy sweaters. (Mmmm… sweaters! Especially on cute guys! What?)
Seriously, though—we’d been reading August magazines and sweating underneath our bazooms (does this happen to you?) and thinking how weird/awful it was to even look at heavy coats and knee-boots when it’s 88 degrees outside. But then—the change of heart happened. It may have been a pair of wood-heeled boots that did it. Or maybe it was a khaki jacket. Or a deeply romantic shade of dark-purple lipstick. In any case, it’s official. We’re ready to shop. We’re talking to you, fall: You better bring it. |

The Royal Treatment
Sooo, the boyfriend's mother is coming for a visit. Panic, us? Of course not! Okay, a little. There’s so much to do! Buy a new dress, get some fancy wine, clean the house… wait… the house… oh no! Just cleaning won't cut it—it desperately needs a makeover. What can we do in a weekend to spruce it up?
Happily, the newly-opened NobaL Home in the Pearl has everything we need. With fabulously fun items, perfect for anyone’s home—soaps, lotions, and jewelry, candles, glassware, and placemats—we couldn't help but grab one of almost everything. We picked up the most adorable apron and new dish towels for when we, ahem, "cook" for our boyfriend's mom. And we picked out some photographs and paintings (by local artists, no less) to line our walls. Then we carried home our wares in adorable totes and shopping bags made from recycled materials. (Hey, we’re just doing our part!)
Thanks to NobaL Home, we have a newly accessorized abode, fit for royalty (or a somewhat persnickety houseguest) that didn't cost a fortune.

Celebrate Good Times
Now that it’s finally summer (it is finally summer, right?), we’re cramming in all of the warm-weather celebration our little hearts can handle. We’re knee-deep in happy hours, barbeques, and all-night dance parties.
In true summer-party style, we headed in to Pitxi, a new restaurant and wine bar in the University Park neighborhood. We cozied up to the bar and ordered a nice glass of Cabernet and a little something called “Bananas for Chocolate,” a heavenly chocolate cake with caramelized bananas on top. It was plate-licking good. The hubs ordered a killer cheese plate off the happy hour menu, and skipped the wine in favor of his favorite summertime ale. While we’d already stuffed ourselves with dinner (summertime celebration, remember?), we watched as plate after plate of mouthwatering meals were delivered to other Pitxi-goers, and regretted having to forgo it.
Ahhh, summer (and Pitxi). You may have us shopping for the next size up, but we celebrate you anyway.

Eye Spy Fashion
So guys don't make passes at gals who wear glasses, huh? Clearly those gals aren't wearing the right frames.
At Myoptic, a new and thoroughly contemporary optometry “boutique” in N. Portland, we recently received a state-of-the-art eye exam that seemed more like a relaxing visit to our girlfriend’s than a must-do wellness checkup. The walls at Myoptic are lined with local artists’ work, bus riders get a free bus ticket, bike riders get a power bar, and a portion of the exam proceeds go to local nonprofits. (Did you expect anything less in Portland?) Oh, and after learning we needed spectacles, we fell in love with the fabulous selection of unique, modern eyewear from small vendors such as O&X New York, Ogi Eyewear, Seraphin, Fysh, SALT., Paul Frank, and gotti—no dime-store specs found here!
Our outlook on life has been a little fuzzy, what with the completely cloudy summer we’re having and all, but thanks to Myoptic, our future is looking bright. Who knew having your eyes checked could be so much fun?

Looptworks
Waste not—that’s Looptworks’ credo. Their entire line of clothing and accessories is made from pre-consumer excess—basically all the scrap fabric, zippers, thread, buttons, etc. from the apparel industry. Who knew? And since their supplies are limited, so are the runs—they even number each item on the label. So you’re getting something cool, local, and eco-friendly. Best part? It won’t cost you a college tuition to deck yourself out in their awesome outfits.

Our Latest Obsession
Finding the perfect pair of jeans is akin to winning the lottery. It’s rare, it can change your life, and your friends want a piece of it.
We definitely won the denim lottery when we found Agave Denim, so we’re sharing the wealth. It's locally designed, the cuts are super-flattering, the styles are spot-on, the denim is gorgeous (Turkish cotton!), and they use Lycra (no Spandex!) for stretch that doesn’t stretch out. Find them at Mercantile and Lily Atelier in Camas, or order online!

The Scoop on Poop
We took our friend’s dog to the park as a favor. Little did we know our four-legged friend would paint the park brown. Armed with one plastic bag, we folded and refolded to pick up his mess—what’s she feeding him?
In hindsight (pun intended) we needed the ScooPup Pocket from Tiny Growl. The super cute waterproof pocket makes the undignified task of picking up poo almost dignified. Our friend owes us big time!

Getting’ Dirty
When we were little kids, we had a sandbox in the backyard that was mostly a “mudbox.” It was thick, sticky, and fun as heck to be in it. Who knew it made our skin happy? We were just happy to have a reason to get dirty.
Portland General Store’s Mud Scrub is much more refined, but has the same effect. It’s detoxifying (thanks to ground organic coffee beans), skin-restoring (thanks to alpha hydroxys) and just plain amazing.
