“How Can I Be Overdrawn if I Still Have Checks?” A friend of ours had that as a license-plate cover in the 90s, and we thought it was sooo funny. Until yesterday. We got that “overdraft” notice from ye olde bank and just about pooped our pants.

What? What! Whaaaat??? It can’t be true! We honestly did not see that one coming, and now we’re in panic mode until the next paycheck rolls in. We told a friend and she said, “That’s what credit cards are for.” Sage advice, but isn’t that how we got into this mess in the first place? There’s only one thing to do at this point to make ourselves feel better: Charge a new pair of shoes!

The Journey Home

Didn’t someone once say, “You can’t win ’em all?” The day we moved into our new house, the floor-to-ceiling home-decorating journey began. We painted—and repainted. We bought stuff—and bought more stuff. Loved—and hated. After lots of trial and error, we finally decked out our happy home.

We just really wish that Alder and Co. was around when we began our odyssey into decorating madness. Stocked from top to bottom in adorable housewares and unique art-inspired trinkets, Alder and Co. would have made our decorating dilemmas easier. We wouldn’t have thought twice about buying that cute throw rug, fun candle, adorable dishes or serving platters. Of course, we probably would have also bought cute clothes, shoes, and funky nail polishes from their international market, but who’s counting, right?

Indeed, we totally lost out for not having the pleasure of shopping Alder and Co. when we started decorating. But we’re winners now (and so are you), because Alder & Co. is ready and waiting to be discovered for your home décor journey… or just great shopping!

Let Your Soul Glo

During a recent overly-indulgent evening with a bit too much chocolate pots de crème and an excessive amount of red wine, we were lamenting the fact that this summer has got to be breaking records for gloominess and grey skies. Next morning, we rolled out of bed with a slight hangover, and a happier outlook on life: despite the lack of sunshine to warm our souls, we decided to do something lavish just for us. Spa day!

Enter The Jayah Rose Salon, a little gem tucked into the up-and-coming Williams Avenue area, where we treated ourselves to a full day of luxury. We started with a seaweed facial, moved onto a deep-tissue massage, then we got a new ‘do and (ahem) color, and wrapped up the day with a mani and pedi. And not just any mani/pedi; The Jayah Rose Salon has a certified MINX nails specialist in the house—bring it, Beyoncé!

Phew, we needed that.  There’s nothing quite like a day at the spa to rejuvenate the mind, body, and soul. Sunshine?  Who needs it. We’re glowing from the inside out.

Find Your Sole Mate

When it comes to shoe-shopping, there are basically three options: Cheap and Tacky, Nice But Expensive, and To-Die-For But Outrageously Expensive. What's a girl (okay, a girl who doesn't live on a certain defunct sitcom where a writer's salary pays for a closet full of Manolos) to do?

In Portland, the answer can be summed up in two words: Miss Meers. The Bridgeport Village location—the latest of four from the Eugene-based boutique—is as cute and girly as the name implies, packed with a range of top lines like Sam Edelman, Franco Sarto and Marc Jacobs, in a variety of doable price points. So what’s a local store got to offer us that the big boys, er… gals, can’t? Owner Meera Willis-Majors and her staff handpick each pair to make sure there’s something perfect for everyone, for starters. This means more jaw-dropping footwear and accessories than you can shake a footie at.

Still can’t find the perfect slides? They incorporate customer requests into their stock whenever they can. Even Carrie and the gang didn’t get that kind of great service.

To Be or Not to Be?

Since we hover around the 5’6 range, we like being tall when we go out. We love our heels—wedges, stilettos and platforms. But sometimes, Portland’s topography (and weather) makes it tough to trip the night fantastic in saucy shoes.

Footzy Rolls solve the conundrum—they’re completely rollable and foldable “shoes” that are waterproof and have a skid-proof sole, so you can hike around downtown (or wherever) in comfort & safety, then pop on your skyscrapers at your destination!

Be Kind—and Shop!

Every once in a while we get a twinge of guilt when we’re shopping. We donate to charity, but when we want those earrings… we’re only thinking of ourselves.

Happily, downtown Portland is doing the giving for us! Snap up a “Compassion Coupon” for deals on everything from dining and shopping to flowers, spa services, gifts, mini-golf, even parking!  With each Coupon you purchase, you get a discount to that business, and they donate $5 to New Avenues for Youth.

There's No Shame in This Game

Nookie happens. At least, that's what we're hoping for. As red-blooded, grown women, we proudly admit that we do, yes indeedy, get nakey with guys. And when it's time for lovin’, why shouldn't we be prepared?

This condom compact from Just in Case ensures that you're never at a loss for protection, and its ladylike looks keep your intentions on the d-lo (even if it falls out of your handbag). That kind of certainty makes having fun much more fun!
