  PORTLAND PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
August 20, 2010

After a rash of mediocre-looking movies, we’re excited to hit the megaplex again. (Don’t hate us—but we’re not going to see Eat, Pray, Love. Sorry! But any movie our mom loves we never like, and vice-versa.) However, we are definitely going to see Cyrus, and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and, shamefully, the new Piranha movie. (We love cheese! What can we say.)

In any case, our movie-viewing routine usually consists of hiding a water bottle and a packet of gummi bears in ye olde handbag, then trying to find the theater’s “sweet spot.” Not too close, but not too far from the screen; preferably toward the middle of a row, but close enough to the aisle to allow for a mid-movie tinkle; and hopefully, behind someone short. Too many times we’ve missed key scenes or plot points because we’re trying to see past someone’s giant head, ear, hat or Jersey-pouf. Huh. Maybe all that pickiness is why we don’t get to the movies that often. (Also: our behinds go numb. Anyone else cursed with that odd affliction?)

Anyhoo, you’ll need an adorable bag for all your movie-booty. Forward this issue to 5 friends and CC picks@portlandpicks.com, and you’ll be entered to win an “Everything” bag from Lizbags, in the color of your choice! (See the Chick Picks below for more info!)

Spirits in the Material World

Portland is a town where people follow their hearts. Want to open a vintage store to sell cowboy boots and records? This is the place. Want to start your own record label, bake cookies with bacon, open a music venue/vegan podiatrist’s office? How about a retail spot for clothing of your own design? Then there’s no place else to be.

Which is why Haunt, a disarmingly sweet retail venture by Holly Stalder (of Seaplane fame), Laura Irwin and Rachael Donaldson, couldn’t have come to a better spot. Tucked into the well-curated shops at 8th & E. Burnside, Haunt is deceptively tiny, but wickedly chic. Just try to resist the vintagey jewely by Demimonde, the luscious Precious Knit pieces by Irwin, or Stalder’s rack of ready-to-wear items. And if you haven’t fallen in love yet, peek into the studio space, where custom creations—including divine wedding dresses—are designed.

These three lovely ladies have definitely upped the ante for local design, and Haunt is going to attract national attention. We hope they never leave Portland! They’re absolutely perfect for us.

Where Wishes Come True

Our favorite scene from The Wizard of Oz is when Dorothy, Toto, and the gang are headed to the Emerald City, surrounded by all those amazing flowers. Flowers in every direction—as far as the eye can see. We dream of our boyfriend filling our room with flowers, floor to ceiling, and ravishing us in the sweet-smelling… too much information?

Just because that fantasy never became a reality (hint, hint, Honey) doesn’t mean we can’t surround ourselves with fragrant flowers and stunning botanical designs. Enter Emerald Petals and Bloke, our new BFFs on Mississippi Avenue. It’s part old-school flower shop with a modern edge (Emerald Petals, an eco-florist), and part visually stimulating home décor pieces with a twist (Bloke). We found gorgeous seasonal flowers from local vendors (available for delivery—just in case we want to pretend a secret admirer sent them), vintage containers, and found objects inspired by nature.

Emerald Petals and Bloke design amazingly unique creations sprung out of a passion for all things pretty. Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore.

The Thrill of the Hunt

We always flinch a little when shopping with our mom. She has her style, we have ours, and there’s almost no common ground. She has great taste—and expensive taste—but after wearing one of Mom’s picks out to brunch, we’re usually ready to part with it.

And now we know exactly where to go to consign not only Mom’s gifts, but those items we love but haven’t worn in a while, and stock up on special pieces that she should have bought us in the first place! (Sorry, Mom.) Cerise—A Consignment Boutique, isn’t your typical resale store. Brand new to Lake Oswego, their selectively cultivated array includes everything from vintage pieces (hello, gorgeous hand-dyed slips!) to hip standouts like True Religion and Joe’s jeans, Marc Jacobs pumps, killer boots and estate jewelry. With a focus on high-end designer/department store pieces and a few quirky items mixed in, Cerise is a treasure hunt for the savvy shopper.

Anyone who’s into repurposing and recycling—with a big dose of style and bargain prices—will love Cerise. You’ve gotta check it out!

We love it when you send us tips about what’s cool in Portland, and recently a reader clued us in about Lizbags—locally made bags that can truly make life easier, and more adorable. Hooray!

From supercute produce, coin, laptop and lunch bags to bags for glasses, sandwiches, and “everything,” we found Lizbags’ fabrics to be irresistible, and the prices to be spot-on. We can’t wait to show them off!

Genius/Jeanius

Once or twice, we’ve had a few too many cocktails and our strut in heels becomes far from graceful. One wrong step off the sidewalk and… wipeout!

On top of the embarrassment? A huge hole in our designer jeans. It used to be $200 in the trash, but now we just mail them into Denim Therapy, and three weeks later they return magically restored as if the incident never happened. Now if we could only convince the witnesses...

“Celebrity Skin”

Okay, that title is a Hole reference, but really what we’re talking about are these amazing Trove Tkees flip-flops, which are coveted by celebrities. Why? Because they make legs look a mile long by actually matching your skin tone. Ferreals.

Yeah, yeah, summer’s close is drawing near, but we still have a few weeks to bop around in next-to-nothing footwear. And just think—you’ll be ready to go with these Tkees next spring! Available locally at Adorn.
