October 15, 2010
We’re not exactly shy about our color of choice. Let’s face it, Portlanders have an air of hubris when it comes to being green. And it’s well-deserved. We work hard to keep our planet (and ourselves) respectably healthy.
So once again, it’s time for Portland Picks’ Annual Green Guide, where we celebrate the cream of the green crop. This issue is full of terrific, sustainable ideas… in places you may not have thought to look for them! And don't miss our unprecedented list of Hip Happenings down below. Scroll down the page to get some juicy deals and ideas for the weekend!
Bonus: Forward this issue to 5 friends & CC picks@portlandpicks.com, and you’ll be entered to win the fabulous (and green!) Pasteesh necklace featured in Chick Pick #2, below! |

Get Cozy—Naturally
Fall is our favorite time of year—we love any reason to snuggle up. And we’re all about snuggling into a warm, cozy fleece from Icebreaker’s new “Realfleece” line. It’s 100% real Merino fleece and it’s all about comfort and instant warmth, the natural way.
Fast Company magazine calls Realfleece “perfect for a hike” and “indispensable.” (We’d like to add “running errands” and “hanging out” to their list.) Stop by Icebreaker’s flagship Touch_Lab store in the Pearl to get your hands on a Realfleece of your own!

The Hostess with the Mostest
We had a lot of guests this summer, and we totally pamper them. (We keep saying that we need to stay in our guest room!) We stocked up at Indigo Traders, with green products from around the Mediterranean. From traditional hand-loomed Turkish towels (lightweight and super absorbent) to the largest selection of olive-oil soaps in town, our guests are happy.
And we couldn’t resist stocking up for the kitchen with organic, fair-trade olive oils, sustainably harvested olive-wood cutting boards, utensils and bowls, and recycled glass dinnerware. Perfectly green!

The Green Way to Clean
Our mom discovered microfiber cleaning cloths a few years ago, and she has been singing their praises ever since. Just add water—no paper towels to throw away, no toxic chemicals, no fumes—and you can clean everything from windows to stainless steel to your car. Genius, right?
Right! So we’re headed to Kitchen Kaboodle to pick up E-cloths, the gold standard in microfiber, at a great price. Each cloth has up to 1,250 miles of incredibly thin fibers, ready to fulfill all your cleaning needs—naturally!

Pretty is as Pretty Does
We like eye-popping jewelry, and we prefer if something about it is a little bit green. So when we found Pasteesh, it felt like kismet.
Her designs use upcycled and unused old-stock vintage components, and this necklace in particular is especially sweet (you could even win it!). Vintage enameled flowers are topped by a vintage filigree button, creating a stunning pendant that’s paired with hand-wired vintage beads in Lucite, faux turquoise, and yellow glass. Ah-may-zing.

Give Good Hair
As particular as we are about jewelry, our hair products must meet even more stringent requirements. They must be paraben- and laurel/laureth sulfate-free, and they must be epic when applied.
Locally based sidlab haircouture always fits the bill, and their new Rain Drops argan oil treatment is an absolute dream. It’s nourishing, quenching, and smells incredible. Just a few drops add antioxidants and Vitamin E, plus gorgeous shine. It might be the best thing ever.

It’s In the Bag…
We discovered baggu bags almost two years ago, and have been fans ever since. They hold a ton and weigh practically nothing, and the array of colors is mind-boggling. So when we heard about their new collaboration with clothing-design house No. 6, we were on it.
Our favorite is the Big Graphite Animal (we love our ginormous bags!), and all the No. 6 baggus have a zip pocket. Fashion + eco-friendly = our new crush.
