  PORTLAND PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
April 29, 2011

We are planners, and love knowing what’s going to happen in advance. We love our big ole paper desk calendar. It has big white squares for every day of the month so we can—get this—write things down. It’s like a security blanket for our social life.

Unfortunately, not a lot of other people use our strategy—or else they play along with us (“Wouldn’t miss it for anything!”) and then they don’t show up. (Portlanders? You’re on notice for that, btw. Forget “Rose City,” we’re going with “Flake City.” Just say “no” if you don’t wanna go!)

The point is that we have a huge list of unbelievably fun & festive sales & events this week in our Hip Happenings, listed below. Don’t miss a single one, and be sure to mark your calendars.

Mama Knows Best

We grew up in a house of re-use. Old towels were fashioned into pot holders, old pants became shorts, heck, we even re-used paper towels sometimes. Re-use and recycle is a part of our DNA, and Mag-Big's owner, Cassie, might just be our soul-sister.

She has filled her shop with nothing but local and sustainable goodies. Mag-Big boasts more than 240 local designers, with more arriving every week. Shop the fun housewares (hot-guy hand towels anyone?), stationery, apparel, art, and jewelry that are tucked into every nook & cranny of this cozy shop. We're long-time fans of SheShe screen-printed shirts, and Mag-Big has selection aplenty. We also spotted the sweetest handmade skivvies, kids' sewing kits created by a 5th grader, and to-die-for Lazy Lolita hand-dyed slips. The back room is host to a monthly rotation of local artists, and Mag-Big opens its doors to the community for DIY craft nights and fashion shows.

Back in the day, we were pretty embarrassed by our mom's upcycling ways. But it looks like mom was right … again.

Sweet as Can Be

We don’t have kids, but we love shopping for them. How cute does everything look in miniature? It’s not even funny how many times we’ve hovered over baby shoes wondering how we could incorporate them into our living-room décor.

Thank goodness for Hanna Andersson—we can browse and ooh and ahh and pick something adorable up for nieces and nephews that are too great to display. They have to be worn to be appreciated! And next Saturday, May 7, their newest store comes to Portland in Washington Square. There’s going to be a big party, too, from 10 am to 2 pm, with gifts with purchase (while supplies last), prizes, kids’ craft projects, and a 20% discount off regular-priced hannas in the store during the event. You can even meet their founder, Gun Denhart—the real Hanna Andersson!

We suggest bringing in your gently used “Hanna-Me-Downs” to benefit kids through the Caring Closet, too. What an opportunity to give… and get! (We’re available to “babysit” that afternoon, btw, as long as “babysitting” means a trip to Hanna Andersson!)

Live Your Adventure

We don’t enjoy camping. Like “The Princess and the Pea,” we can feel every pebble underneath our sleeping bags. That whole “don’t shower until you get home” thing is total bunk. And what’s with the bad food? Just because we’re in the middle of nowhere doesn’t mean we want to eat ramen. So when we feel the need to relax, rejuvenate, and get back to nature, we head to Skamania Lodge. Um, hello? They have a spa!

Just 45 minutes east of Portland, Skamania is in the spectacular Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, so we can get our nature on, then find our bliss with naturally inspired signature treatments at the Waterleaf Spa & Fitness Center. Afterward, we’ll savor some of the region’s most celebrated dishes and award-winning cuisine in The Cascade Dining Room or the River Rock.

Sure, there’s hiking, biking, fishing, golf, rock-climbing, whitewater rafting—you know, adventure—right there for the taking. But we’ll be taking in the breathtaking views of the Columbia River and Cascade Mountains, and catching up on our Jackie Collins.
