Simply Spring: Princess Picks

It’s spring. Time to purge our closets, get rid of things, and get organized. Let’s make our lives efficient. Let’s hire a personal chef, get the dry cleaning delivered, let’s pay our bills with auto pay, bank online. Let’s have someone else plant and water our pots (though, of course, pretend it’s all us). Maybe it’s time to reconsider the weekly at-home auto detailing your husband suggested. Heck, let’s have the groceries delivered. Who has time for the supermarket? And while you’re at it, what about a drive-thru Starbucks to save a harrowing trip with the little ones? We could save so much time and energy and spend time on what really matters: shopping, spa’ing, and (say it with us) “me-me-me-me!” This is our Princess Prescription for sanity. Are you listening Mr. Husband? We could otherwise simply go crazy and then where would you be?

On this new road to Princessdom, you first need a personal chef. No two ways about it. We need Chef Lee Petrie of Supper Thyme, to come to our home one day a week and prepare three or four healthy organic meals for our family….to take care of dinner for the week! (Remember, you get a hall pass for one crappy dinner. You can say what a crazy day it’s been, no time to get to the store, “let’s just have soup and sandwiches”….and then of course you have to dine out a couple nights, one with kids, one fancy date night….so you’re golden.) Suggestion: Just get him, or the kids, to do the dishes afterward and you’re REALLY set!

Chef Lee only uses the freshest ingredients, organic (mad cowless) meats and produce. Just heat and serve for delicious, home-cooked meals. It’s so reasonable, more cost efficient and you can feel secure that she only uses the finest. She takes into consideration everyone’s dietary needs, allergies, likes and dislikes. She will help you plan low-carb/high-protein meals, or whatever you desire. She makes fabulous suggestions, from Chicken Pot Pie’s, to Salmon and Corn chowder with homemade corn bread, to stuffed Pork Chops, grilled vegetables, and couscous. She can customize anything, and it’s really very reasonably priced. Her grocery bill and 4 meals for a family cost less than what we spend on groceries, not to mention the emotional duress of it all. And while she’s shopping, feel free to ask her to pick up some milk, coffee, whatever else you need. It’s a dream come true!

Just try it one week. We dare you. Supper Thyme; www.supperthyme.com, Chef Lee Petrie, 503.235.5967

And while we are talking quality food: Please also don’t forget about Organics To You (www.organicstoyou.org). We got our tub today and it was such a jackpot! We get it every two weeks, mysteriously placed at our front door like a baby. We opened the lid and found our organic milk, strawberries, bananas, organic salad greens, asparagus, peas, zucchini, apples, all kinds of seasonal fruits and veggies. It’s a beautiful thing. 503.236.6496

Spring Cleaning Picks:

All right, you know the drill. It’s spring. Time to really purge, delve into those closets and free our shelves from last year’s styles. Rid ourselves of excess from frumpy years past. And let’s face it, you aren’t ever going to fit back into those size zero Calvin Klein jeans from 8th grade. It’s time to let them go: Be free, be free Famolare’s with the wavy bottoms that you can’t believe were ever in, be free gauchos (no, those will never pass as capri’s), be free Gunny Sack dress, wrap around pants, and foofy bridesmaid dresses; be free Fat pants, size 4 pants, size 12 pants, size 10 pants….

And if it’s just too painful, you might have to call in the pros:

Everything in the Closet will handle it all -- closet organization, wardrobe consulting, and personal shopping. Sarah will rid you of those holey granny undies you find it hard to part with. She will advise you on what you should get rid of and what you’ll need for this season, accessories and all. With 10+ years of retail experience at the finest stores, forget Tom Cruise, Sarah will complete you. She will tell you what to wear with what, help you find the perfect gown for that black tie evening, put together outfits from what you have, and more. Your friends will look at you and think, “She is always so put together. I don’t know how she does it.” But you’ll have a secret: Sarah Burpee’s, Everything in the Closet, 503.203.1123, pinkdress@mac.com.

Perhaps it’ll hurt a little less if you can make a buck or two off these duds. Why not take your old Chanel and Prada and other clothes to Consigning Women in Lake Oswego (near Wild Oats/Natures.) This is practically the second hand store to the Stars. And they pay you, fancy that! It helps ease the pain of parting with your beloved belongings. Consigning Women, 17777 Pilkington, Ste. 500, Lake Oswego, OR 97035; 503.697.1636

Beauty Picks:

  • It’s sandal time and you know what that means! Time to get those tootsies in tiptop shape. We recommend Servello’s Feet Treats from Servello Herbal Body Essentials. We love Servello because they are au natural, just the way we like everything. All their products are handmade in Portland and packed full of vitamins, minerals, and the essential fatty acids our skin needs. And they are free of ingredients that irritate our skin and eyes.

Feet Treats include foot tea, lemon and mint foot scrub, toe and heel butter (great to get rid of those nasty cracks you never thought you’d have), and a yummy foot mask. Your little piggies will thank you! Servello’s Feet Treats….mmm mmm good!

Servello products are available at the finest spas and salons such as Halo, Rejuvenation Day Spa, Essential Lotions and Oils on NW 23rd, and Bandon Dunes Golf Resort to name a few. For additional information or to order online, please call 503.888.1573.

  • Hats! A must-have for spring. One sure-fire way to stay youthful is to cover up. You should always wear sunscreen and you should always, always wear a hat. And that’s why hats are all the rage and have never been more fun.

We especially love the Gap’s new 60s Patchwork widebrim floppy with matching bag. You’ll wow them at the beach with these!

  • We love these western shirts from Lucky Brand.

They are feminine and lightweight, and look great over a tank or camisole. Cool with jeans or worn in lieu of a jacket. At the Lucky Brand store on NW 23rd.

  • Sunglasses are going Jackie O! The bigger the better.
I know it’s hard to make the leap, but you’ll be so cutting edge and glam.

You’ll look just like a movie star in these Paul Smith Spectacles!
Available at Hub Optix in Pioneer Place.

Prego Pick: Eternal Maternal.

We think this is as pure and soulful a gift a woman could ever receive. Because it is you, and it’s your baby, and it’s the most beautiful sculpture you could ever own. And it’s so clever. The perfect gift for your friend or loved one: A pregnancy belly cast kit.

Amazing! $44.00, made in Portland. www.eternalmaternal.com

Peace Monkey – we made a booboo and didn’t link the website last week so we’re trying it one more time.

Please visit one of our favorite, ultra fabulous baby brands….Peace Monkey at www.peace-monkey.com.

You’re little one will be the hippest kid on the block.

Music Pick: Tom Jones Reloaded (really)

Warning: you want to drive really fast, you picture yourself starring in a car commercial, you even become one of those people that drive past you with windows down, their volume way up and their car vibrating because they want you to hear that they listen to cool music (even though they don’t!). You want to sing really loudly and bounce around and belt out the groovy lyrics.

You don’t care what the children think, and maybe even forget they’re back there for a sec. Hey, we can’t help ourselves. We were too young for Tom Jones years ago, or else we were too busy with Keith Partridge to pay him mind…but we love him now. Does it make us old, are we uncool?

Oh, God, have we become grownups?! Or is he one of those so-uncool-they’re-cool-again-older guys?

It’s retro, 70s, James Bond, fun-fun-fun for spring! You gotta get it! Tom Jones Reloaded – and our fave, “Help Yourself” (#18) on the track, play it over and over and over and over – and don’t forget to pump up the volume and open the sunroof. Talk about Saucy Power-Pop, oh my!

Sleeping Beauty Pick:

You know you’re getting old when you wake in the morning to large indentations on your cheek from a hard sleep on the creased pillow. You know you’re really getting old when come noon, they’re still there. Maybe it’ll help a touch if we get some spectacular, highest thread count sheets. Maybe it’s worth the pretty penny to sustain our youth.

Think of the princess and the pea…I mean really, luxury linens ARE everything. Of course, you should sleep on your back, and it’s easier if it’s fluffy soft, silky, and a 400-thread count. But if in the night, you scootch over onto your cheek, it’ll bounce back a helluva lot sooner with the more expensive lush sheets. We’re almost sure of it.

For the finest in luxe linens, shop at French Quarter
French Quarter Linens,
1313 Northwest Glisan Street, 503-282-8200
Or, 2325 Northwest Westover Road, 503-241-8436

Picnic Pick:

Summer’s almost here – nearly picnic weather. Of course there’s no time to cook, if you want to take advantage of the all too brief outdoor summer months. You’ll have to pick up some tasty take-out from Tennessee Red's Barbecue for a finger-licking feast at home!

Try the Rebel Rib Combo and experience a variety of Memphis and North Carolina ribs. And be sure to save room for dessert, the key lime pie is a must! Tennessee Red’s 2133 SE 11th Ave, 503-231-1710

Oh yes, and before we forget….that drive-thru Starbucks:

Unfortunately there’s none in Portland Metro but we think it’s worth the little extra drive for this luxury. Strap in the kids, crank Tom Jones just a tad, and get cruisin’. Think of it as Mommy’s Quiet Time of sorts. (whatever works.) This is a huge convenience – it beats trying to order while you chase the kids around, plus, not that we recommend it, but you can look like hell and not risk running into any old boyfriends. Priceless.
