life + style to you: every Friday
June 18th 2004

Portland Picks has one eye on Hollywood and the other is cast on the very Portland things that one simply must do while the weather works in our favor! Summer fads and fabulous watering holes, what to wear and where to wear it, we also have some amazing shortcuts that will make your life easier and dare we say it, more fun! From little dogs to beach towels to dining in elegance and ease, Portland Picks has it all!

Doggie Style:

The latest trend in fashion is small dogs! You can add so much to your outfit by wearing your dog. It used to just be for fussy old Eastern European grandmothers but now it is the hippest and yippiest of all the summer totes. You’re never quite complete without this accessory, and it makes quite a statement. It says a lot about who you are. (Doting, maternal, fashionable, rich, love of all creatures big and small, a lot of time on your hands…)

It’s also like a Barbie doll for grown women, with all the fabulous clothes, shoes, jewelry, sunglasses. You can even dress just like your dog (or your dog can dress like you). Best of all, it’s a whole new unlimited world out there to shop for, as we found out on our recent trip to the swanky Lexi Dog Boutique and Social Club (416 NW 10th in the Pearl, or 6767 SW Macadam)

Fashion Must Haves for your Dog:

  1

Lily Boots: Shoes, shoes, shoes! You can never have enough shoes. Well this holds true for the pup too. Protect your doggie’s feet with these fabulous, couture doggie booties. Honestly, you have never seen cute until you see these wee booties on your pooch.

Of course, we like pink the best! And they don’t discriminate. They come in all sizes, so even your big macho dog that wouldn’t be caught dead in them, can wear them too.

2 Doggles: This may seem downright obvious, but now that it’s summer, your dog really needs sunglasses for cryin’ out loud. Otherwise he’ll squint, get crows feet, and wrinkles, and they’re certainly cheaper than Botox, which you’ll surely end up investing in next.

Actually, talk about a hip dog. Your dog needs these fully functional Doggles, especially when he’s out hiking, jogging, riding in that convertible… to protect his eyes and keep them healthy. Plus, he’ll make such a cool impression with his doggie friends. They’ll know how cool he is with his Doggles and he’ll be so popular.

The chicks, or dare we say bitches, will be all over him.

T-shirts from Hip Doggie: Yet another of Paris Hilton’s ventures, she has created hip clothing for dogs.

Just like the cool t-shirt trend for people, t-shirts are all the rage with the doggie set.

And Hip Doggie rules.

Puchi Bag: Like the shoe fetish, bags are IT too.

The impression you make with his carrier is not to be underestimated. He has to be seen in it, it has to be comfy, stylish.

We all know how stylin’ Pucci is. Well, Puchi is hot for dogs too. Puchi – where canine comfort and couture collide.

These are so darn gorgeous; we would like to own them even if we didn’t have a dog.

Searching high and low for the hottest summer make-up around?

In case you haven’t heard the buzz surrounding Paint Cosmetiques’ fresh and funky cosmetics line, all you have to do is open up InStyle, O Magazine, W or Allure to hear its praises (among a zillion others). While their line encompasses everything from cheeks to eyes to lips to face, we’re over the moon about their Lip Gloss Wands and eye shadows.

Their glosses are bleed free, with just enough moisture but ample staying power so you’re not reapplying every 10 minutes (finally!). Gone is that wretched lip-gloss plastic ooze in your mouth. These supple products soften your lips while creating a satin finish. We especially love Quartz and Rhythm (great for summer). The eye shadows glide onto your skin (they’re triple-milled and enriched with silicone proteins) and the colors are to die for.

We’re not the only fans either…Paint Cosmetiques devotees include Britney Spears, Angelina Jolie (she was wearing Paint when she won her Oscar), Kate Hudson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sarah Jessica Parker, and scores of others.

Check out their 172 products (glosses $16, single shadows $16.50).

Shimmy and sparkle your way around the cabana in these fab new matching nail lacquers and glamour dusts from Peek Cosmetics.

We haven’t seen such vibrant colors in eons... or, choose a subtler, sheerer shade to suit your palette. It is not just the cute bottles!

We originally fell in love with the package but we have matured and now absolutely love the product.

We adore the Glamour Dust --- wear it over the polish or a little sparkle for your sexy birthday suit!

Peek at all their gorgeous shades ($20).

Ever wished you could lounge around your room with the sumptuous scents of summer when the weather just doesn’t want to comply?

Enter Aunt Sadie’s Candles…it’s like they bottled the beach and delivered it to your bedroom, but without the sand in your bathing suit and the saltwater in your hair.

They say that scent is the sense most closely linked to memory. Be transported to a sunny, sunny place.

Pick one or both up ($15)

We love these beach towels from Garnett Hill.

What a welcoming bright statement on the beach! Granted, we also adore them because of the matching beach bag (with room to hold our spf and Lucky magazine too).

Cheerful colors and gorgeous, thick quality towels that you want to stretch out on. Orla Kiely Beach Towel and Bag. Garnett Hill

Seersucker is so sweet and preppy and feminine.

We’re so happy it’s back in these lady-like styles.

We especially love this seersucker sundress from Garnett Hill, $148.

The perfect cover-up for any swimsuit this season, the tunic has made a comeback as a “must-have” for summer.

Paired with jeans or shorts, it’s the perfect funky clothing accessory, and the detailed embroidery makes us love them even more. They say that a yearning for the seventies is the theme of this summer. Hop in your VW bus and never leave home without your tunic and you are well on your way to the intersection of fashion and comfort!

Embrace your inner hippie and pick one up ($35)

Monkey Bar Buddies: I see London, I see France, but thank heavens I don’t see your underpants! Where were these when we were little girls? They are so cute and clever, and a fashion must-have for the pre-tween set! You know how it is. It can surely ruin your day if there’s even a remote possibility someone might see your underwear. No monkey bars, no criss-cross applesauce, no fun at all.

But now your little princess can wear a dress and feel confident to be free to do all the things she desires without the threat of being “exposed.” And the packaging is so cute. Next time she refuses to wear a dress, just give her Monkey Bar Buddies, made right here in Portland.

  Summer Date Pick:

Summer is here and hopefully with it, some sunny days. We need to enjoy it while we can, bask in the few rainless, hazy, lazy daze of summer.

For a great evening out, head over to dinner and a movie in charming Lake Oswego and feel a million miles away. Sit out on the picturesque lakefront patio at Blinn’s Boathouse, “Where the Hip Sip.” Enjoy a glass of local Syrah, their simple but delicious Wedge salad, their signature smoked pork ribs, and their grilled sweet corn on the cob, and revel in that fleeting summer feeling. 40 N. State Street, 636-4561

After dinner, head next door to a movie at the Lake Twin Cinema, a wonderful mom and pop theater with small town comfort. Enter into the warmth of the cozy living room with fireplace, order some hot tea, and popcorn that isn’t made with that terrible “movie theater butter,” and enjoy the A List movie in a non-commercial setting (with the best quality of picture and sound.) Lake Twin Cinema, Show times: 503-635-5956, Located on State Street next to Blinns, across from Albertsons.

After the movie, stroll around the lake and down to the beautiful New Millennium Park, or head across the street to Moonstruck Chocolate Café for a decaf Latte.

A lovely, easy summer date.

Hip Happenings:

Portland Center Stage – Nothing like live theater. And it’s that time of year again. Time to subscribe for the ‘04-’05 season. This season is not to be missed!

Look what’s coming:

  1

Anna In The Tropics by Nilo Cruz; November 9-28, 2004

This lyrical ode to great literature takes us to Tampa in 1930, where every day the workers at a cigar factory recreate the intoxicating Cuba they left behind.

Into this heady atmosphere comes a mysterious and handsome professional “lector” who reads Tolstoy’s tragic love story, Anna Karenina, aloud to the workers.

The results are seductive, bemusing – and shocking. Winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

  2

The Santaland Diaries by David Sedaris; A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll crave fruitcake.

The best and worst of the holiday season. The Santaland Diaries is David Sedaris’ sardonic account of his job as an elf at Macy’s during the Christmas season.

Truman Capote’s, A Christmas Memory is a heartfelt reminiscence of his boyhood holidays in the rural South. December 7-24, 2004

21 Dog Years (or Doing Time at Amazon.com), written and performed by Mike Daisey. The hilarious rise of one man from customer service obscurity to the executive cubicle.

Mike Daisey comes to Portland to perform his cult-hit, one-man show about the humiliation and hilarity of working at Amazon.com during the early days. A one-time Gen-Xer and former aesthetics major, Mike is unwittingly promoted to Business Development – whatever that is – where he must contend with a cast of characters that defy description.

21 Dog Years is a rare and funny look inside the dot.com mania that reigned (and reined) in the 90s. January 4 – February 4, 2005

For more upcoming shows, or to subscribe to this fabulous season, please visit www.pcs.org or call 503.274.6588.
