  PORTLAND PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
August 6th 2004

We don’t often feel like fairy godmothers, we’re a bit too self-aware for such a generous role but this week’s Portland Picks is just absolutely full of gifts for our readers! We have a wand that in a glittery moment can get you going, restore tired skin and plant your perfect little bottom on the porch of a gorgeous ranch looking out at a meadow! We have what to wear, where to wear it and what to order when you get there! No more excuses, Princess, get out and about and don’t worry about being back before midnight.

Sometimes we need just a little extra incentive to get us moving. For example, many moons ago in Manhattan we'd get home from work and the last thing we wanted to do was go for a jog, but we knew we should. After all, we remembered John Kennedy Junior could be out there and we might miss our chance for him to notice us and see how much we had in common. Naturally this spurred us on. As we jogged through Central Park, there he would be, zipping past us. This was a shot of adrenaline that helped us increase our pace and go the distance.

We would then take the short cut across the park so we could get ahead of him yet again and then run in our best form. (We would contemplate feigning a sprained ankle so he would stop and rescue us...but that's another story.) The next day we'd be on our Mountain Bike, so we could keep up ("See John....we like Mountain biking too!") The moral is, despite what it takes to get you out there, get out there. Perhaps it's just the love of the sport, the healthy spirit of competition, or the stalking of a celebrity... regardless, get moving honey!

The Providence Bridge Pedal:

The third annual Providence Rose Pedal, presented by Wild Oats Natural Marketplace, celebrates cycling in the Portland area throughout August.

On Sunday, August 8 is our favorite, The Providence Bridge Pedal.
Providence Bridge Pedal celebrates bicycling, Portland and the Willamette River bridges. Over 15,000 cyclists will bike across the bridges in the 9th annual Providence Bridge Pedal, making it the second-largest community bike ride in the country.

Because of construction on both the St. Johns and the Broadway bridges, there will be two, six-bridge ride options this year. The full ride is 24 miles long and the family ride is 14 miles long. Both routes cross the top decks of the Fremont and Marquam bridges.

Registration options: Online registration is available through midnight Saturday, Aug. 7, below. Mail-in registration is due by Aug. 2. There will be no registration at area bike stores this year. You can register at the Providence Bridge Pedal Health and Wellness Expo, and on the morning of the ride at SW Pine between Naito
and First Avenue beginning at 6:30 a.m.

Nolita Knows: Nolita has been open for one month now and our lives are so much richer for it. But it’s not just about us and our little britches, and Nolita knows this, that’s why they have men’s clothing too!

YES, THEY HAVE MEN’S!!!! And, their MEN’S clothing rocks: Tees and jeans from AG, James Perse, and Velvet...plus under-the-radar Italian and Japanese designers. Men don't get enough attention...and Nolita is here to help!

Their JEANS SELECTION is AMAZING right now for both Men & Women...and will only get bigger! They buy the hottest, most up-and-coming designer brands on the market. ...and they buy
ONLY what fits!!! The biggest smiles come to their faces when people walk out of their store with new jeans. They live for this. Jeans are one of the toughest things to buy.... and (for us less-than-tall) hemming on jeans is free. (They have an excellent seamstress!!)

Nolita also features some of the most beautiful jewelry around, flowing, breezy dresses, soft tees, sexy lingerie and sumptuous body care from around the world. Later, in the fall, they will have cashmere, cashmere, cashmere!!!

How to find them: The easiest way to land there is to get on the Trolley that heads to NW 23rd and get off at 10th & Lovejoy right in front of their store!! They are right next to the fabulous little Jamison Park with all the water the kids love!

They are open a little later, too. During the weekdays we are open from 10:30-7 pm, Saturday 9:30-6pm and SUNDAYS from 12-4pm---a great day to shop. 7 days a week to shop til you drop!

The Canyons Ranch is comprised of a limited number of exceptional private landholdings, averaging approximately 10 acres, combined with mutual ownership of the entire 1,700-acre ranch and natural preserve.

Each landholding has been carefully tailored to protect privacy and enhance the dramatic vistas of river, meadows, canyons, pinnacles, and mountains.

The Canyons Ranch is a "working country estate without work." The Landholder's Association handles meadowland, vineyard and orchard maintenance, ranch security and all other operations – freeing landholders to enjoy this unique setting.

Toby’s Tofu Dip – This Made-in-Eugene tofu dip is your next addiction, especially if you are carb-conscious. With only 2 grams of carbs, loaded with protein, and no sugar. It has the texture of egg salad. You can eat it by the spoonfuls, like buttah. Spread it on bagels or crackers, dip with chips or raw vegetables.

It is also a great way to build a flavorful sandwich. Tofu Paté is offered in four flavors (we are partial to the zippy jalapeno). Available at New Seasons, Zupan’s, Fred Meyer and other area retailers.

Sometimes we daydream of running away to the circus, but what would we do? What would be our specialty? None of this second rate clown business (no offense to our clown readers), but we’d rather do something more elegant and fabulous, like the trapeze! And now we can…if we want. We’d just have to run away to the Trapeze School of New York.

Doesn’t it look fun? Being high, high, high above the ground and then letting go, for a sec. Well, maybe not since we are a tad prone to vertigo. So, I guess we won’t really be going. But you should. Your friends would think you were way cool. Plus, makes great cocktail party conversation and you’d instantly become a babe magnet.

Vintage Style: Buying and Wearing Classic Vintage Clothes
By: Tiffany Dubin and Ann E. Berman
Published: Harper Collins

Sometimes it’s all about the hunt, the treasure hunt that is. Searching for the perfect Chanel from the 60’s at half the price…now that’s a treasure!

For any woman who ever wondered how to wear vintage clothing with panache, at last there is Vintage Style, the book that takes the mystery out of buying, wearing, and caring for vintage clothes. This is not about Victorian whites, poodle skirts, or boogie-woogie-bugle-boy outfits with peplums, seamed stockings, and snoods. It's about vintage clothes as a mainstream choice, and this fully illustrated book shows just how easily the fashions of yesteryear can be incorporated into a modern wardrobe. It’s balance, baby, like everything else; you want to avoid looking like the stock boy at the used music store. Accent your wardrobe with a classic vintage piece to add your own sense of style that is all yours.

Vintage Style tells you--and shows you--exactly how to get into vintage. This is nothing short of a money-saving source guide and an inspirational blueprint for understanding how to wear vintage clothes with style. Get this book and get hunting!

  A Glimpse of fall:

Oh, no, say it isn’t so! Summer is whirring by. But there is always the clothes we start to get excited about and can’t wait for just a little nip in the air so we can show off our wool and cashmere. In the next few weeks, we’ll be showing you what’s hot for the cool fall.

But since we still want to relish summer and this 100 degree weather, this is just a little tease:

  • Classic Cashmere with a twist (think Grace Kelly)
  • Zebra stripes and Cat Prints, on everything…especially great on shoes, jackets, skirts
  • Chiffon dresses and skirts – sexy and feminine.
  • Adorned and Embellished and Shiny….embroidered pants, sequence tops, metallic heels, gold dresses, fur capelets or collars…think old-style Hollywood
  • Tartan and Tweed. Sounds like a song. Texture is everywhere.
  • Chunky Knit sweaters – especially thick ponchos and oversized comfy sweaters
  • Work Wear: Full skirts with fitted top or blazer. Pencil Skirts with high heels and white tailored shirt. Tailored suits are fabulous (especially love Jil Sander, Celine, and Calvin Klein)…all perfect for work or that ladies luncheon.
