AuPairCare:

One should never underestimate the value of one's staff. There is certainly no such thing as too much help. Let’s see, there’s the butler, the chauffeur, the plant lady, the maid, the day nurse, the night nurse, the nurse maid, the chef (our favorite!), the car wash guy, the ironing lady, the piano teacher, the personal trainer, the gardener, the pool boy (another favorite!), the personal assistant……ummmmm, let’s see what else??

Certainly, even if you lose it all, you must retain the au pair. These girls are cute as buttons and equally indispensable. They are often multi-lingual and can teach your precious several languages. And if that’s not enough, remember a happy busy baby makes a happy mommy. Plus, your au pair can take your little darling to those awful places like Chuck E. Cheese so you don’t have to. Or if that’s just not going to happen at all, remember, Mario’s can be stimulating too (and they do have a little toy corner!)

But you need to find the very best au pair, and it can be a difficult road to hoe. Where do you begin to look? How do you know you can trust the au pair with your precious? Or even worse, what if she gets on your nerves? You need to make sure that your beloved child is treated like a treasure. Word of mouth works but a professional screening service is much better. Never fear, hope is near, for all your au pair needs turn to Au Pair Care.

Au Pair Care has hundreds of au pairs available from over 30 countries. Since 1989, Au Pair Care has been providing thousands of American families with dependable childcare by sponsoring qualified au pairs from abroad. These au pairs are an extension of the family and this experience makes a wonderful cultural exchange.

As a busy parent, you’ll enjoy a better quality of life when your children have a nurturing and dependable caregiver. These au pairs are fully trained in CPR and First Aid, add a cross-cultural benefit and generally cost significantly less than a domestic nanny.

They start with the very best international au pairs, fully screened and qualified to provide the highest quality childcare. They select the best of the best based on formal training, education and level of experience. If you are thinking of getting an au pair, you must use Au Pair Care. Just peruse their website or call our local rep.

Special ****

Sometimes we wish we were the devil-may-care Outward Bound-type, a beautiful and glamorous City Girl, yet able to let down and spend 3 solo nights in the wilderness without our 400 count bed sheets and our $400 eye creams.

So how can we go about fulfilling this joie de vivre cool chick persona? Remember balance and compromise? Well, how about indoor rock climbing? Best of all safe worlds. And you can’t beat the dependable weather!

Or what about camping with a staff that does all the work, like a luxury guided white water rafting trip on the Rogue? Those sound like doable alternatives to eating pine needles and sleeping on rocks without our hairdryer.

Rock climbing at The Portland Rock Gym –

The Portland Rock Gym can be considered the first modular indoor rock gym in the world, and is the only climbing gym in the city of Portland. With its mixture of rope climbing and bouldering, top-rope routes up to 38ft, and towering, overhanging lead wall, PRG offers the most climbing experience for beginning and experienced climbers alike. And it’s great exercise and good for our bum. (Plus, it looks cool on your resume.)

They even have Summer Ladies Night each Wednesday. Rock on!

They also have a gorgeous selection of funky tie belts to wear with your new cords. They are so cute and a must for fall! (You should see the pink with flattering back pockets and paisley lining. Okay, you can copy, just this once, but call us when you’re going to wear them so we can be twins!)

Do we dare say this in Oregon?.....Okay, here goes. “Fur.” There, said it.

Fur is back in retro and ladylike styles (can you say: swing coat?) We know this is Oregon, and we are pro-choice when it comes to fur choice. If you’re uncomfy with it, go faux! If you're somewhere in the middle, just recycle...go shopping at vintage stores or borrow from Grandma’s closet. If you are on the other side, check out the scrumptious luxury designs at Mario’s or Saks, or for more grown up styles visit Schumacher Fur Co (739 SW 10th Ave., 503.222.4596) or Nicholas Ungar Furs (1137 SW Yamhill; 503.241.8024)

Some of our favorites: The Faux fox stole from Anne Klein, $90 or the Marc Jacob Palomino Mink coat, or the Club Monaco rabbit clutch $69.
Any fur accent will do. We are drooling!

Anthropologie is coming!

In fact, it’s practically here.

We have our little noses pressed up against the window at the beautiful new space in the Brewery Blocks, joining the neighboring orbit of Diesel, Mio Gelato, PF Changs, Henry’s Tavern, the new Addidas store and the rest of the other ultra hip brood.

10 With scary gas prices, the warm weather, and no parking, now is the perfect time to invest in this toy. No garage is quite complete without a classic Vespa. Whether it’s off to the market or just a Sunday cruise and some ‘alone time,’ this European City Slicker is your pal.

Sassy Stepford Tips of the Week:
We are always thinking of you! And periodically we will share some top secret tips to enhance your life. Things you should just know and pass on to your own kiddies. Oh the wisdom!

  A

Have a naughty stain? Never fear, help is on the way! Combine equal parts dry Biz and your favorite detergent (for multiple stains- one scoop of each), add warm water to the dry mix, just a bit at a time to form a paste-like substance. Generously spread (with a spoon) onto stains. Let the mixture do its magic for 24 hours and wash clothes as directed.

Check stain after wash. If it’s gone, dry according to drying instructions on tag. If stain is stubborn re-do paste phase and allow it to sit for another 24 hours.

  B

You’re on vacation, poolside. The hunky waiter comes by. You order two martinis. You toss one back, you toss the other in your hair. Great for creating natural highlights. Think Sun-In without the orangey color. (And, the vodka need not be premium.)

C A little dab will do ya: Eeeee-gads! What’s this? Could it really be a pimple, at my age?! Darn, and I finally threw out my Oxy 10 from college. Never fear, just dab a little toothpaste on your “blemish” and it will dry it out immediately. Wish we would have known this one in the sorority. “A penny saved….”

  Portland Pick’s Music Pick::
Our Picks for best local radio station – We are moody, and are known to flip flop, especially with music and our radio stations. (Sometimes, gasp, we’re even in the mood for talk radio!) But, right this minute these are our faves!

105.1 The Buzz
Okay, you might find one or two songs periodically showing up on Kidz Bop ….but that’s a compliment, right?

105.1 is skewed slightly younger, great sense of humor and entertainment value from the djs, and the latest cutting edge songs from our favorite artists. And they have them here first.

If you want the best and you always want to be in the know: Turn it to 105.1.

The Buzz

101.9 KINK
Our whole life, this was it for us, even back in the olden days, when we turned here for the classics (which were actually probably current then.) KINK has a nice balance of old and new, but always cool. They play what you find on 105.1 and then mix it up with great blues and jazz.

The commentary is a bit more cerebral and it skews slightly older…but we are eternally devoted.

The Kink

Portland Pick’s Song of the week:

Everything by Alanis Morisette, from her new album, “So-Called Chaos”

You see everything, you see every part.
You see all my light and you love my dark.
You dig everything of which I'm ashamed.
There's not anything to which you can't relate.
And you're still here…..

This is a lovely song about a real relationship, the good and bad. Very romantic. Extremely recommended. Add it to your ipod!
