life + style to you: every Friday
November 5, 2004

Portland Picks is here to help you face that wonderful season we all adore and the daunting to-do list that we despise.

Take heart, we have researched diligently to find some fabulous gifts for them and amazing corner-cutting tips for you. Like Christmas lights but find the concept of climbing a ladder absurd? We have you covered.

Facing a long holiday flight with children, we are way ahead of you. We’ve tested the cocktails (and cocktail inspired colognes) and we’re ready to report back.

Let’s take the troubles out of coming together as families and be free to concentrate on what really matters, shopping!

Travel Picks:

Okay, it's Thanksgiving, holiday travel time. It can be brutally hectic but we can help. We are thinking of every little luxury to make the experience pleasant.

First, remember, you need to look like a lady on the airplane, none of these sweat suits, or flip flops. Chances are, especially if you're flying in and out of PDX, that your old college boyfriend is too. Trust us. It's a proven scientific study when you look your very worst; the odds increase dramatically that you will bump into the only person who ever dumped you (or the girlfriend he dumped you for). So look your understated yet sophisticated best...always. When you look good, you feel good.

Better yet, why not give the illusion you're a worldly traveler? How about some white jeans, your Tod’s loafers, a periwinkle cable knit v-neck sweater over a simple Three Dot T, finished with a cashmere blanket? You will look oh-so-put together, in a devil may care, I-have-my-!@#$-together-and-am-wildly-successful way.

Identification Tags

To make traveling more efficient, to identify your bag among all the others circling the luggage carousel, you need a neon bag tag you can’t miss.

Cut down the minutes that you spend shoulder to shoulder with the great unwashed, you’ll be so very glad that you bothered.

  3 Z is For Zen

It always makes the flight go faster when you can catch up on that beauty sleep. It’s cramped, stuffy, not an easy task to catch those zzz’s. You need a silky leopard or zebra patterned eye mask from Urbane Zen.

The masks cut out all light and allow you to pretend you are at the spa, not ingesting recycled air. Relax, tune out, and feel refreshed upon your arrival.

Sharper Image – personal entertainment center/dvd player for the kids

It’s hard to travel with young children. They can’t sit still for long, and want YOU to entertain them (imagine!), play with them, read to them, sing to them for the ENTIRE painfully long flight...or else they will torture you by knowingly screaming, crying and kicking the seat in front of them.

To avoid your share of evil glances from others (don’t they see how cute they are?!), there’s really only a couple choices.

  1. Benedryl for them (and you)....or
  2. A DVD Player. A little indulgence once in a while will be okay, and for your sanity it’ll be well worth it.

Then there’s the videos...They will self destruct in 48 hours!

Okay, you’re set with your portable DVD player, now you need to rent the videos. Oh but we dread going to the video store. It scares us. “That’ll be 3.99 for the movie, and $182.00 in late fees, please.” We just can’t be responsible for returning our movies on time. It’s hard to find the videos and their cases, and then put them in their cases, the right cases, and then actually get to the video store....in between scouts, soccer practices, tutors, ballet, grocery store, cleaners, doctor’s appointments….!

We were waiting with bated breath for a solution and we didn’t have to wait long. We discovered video rentals Mission Impossible style – dissolving DVDs! And we bear no responsibility for their return.

They just self-destruct in 48 hours. How cool is that!? How do they know? Well, who cares, we love this!

You can go on vacation with your videos and not worry about returning them late or losing them. They just disappear, out of your hair, one less thing to worry about.

Cashmere Blanket Wrap

Oh luxury. This is a must-have scrumptious accessory for curling up with on the plane, and the perfect travel companion. This is an easy wrap that’ll pack well and wear well where ever your final destination may take you.

You deserve cashmere.

Snuggling up with those coarse, harsh airline ‘towels’ is no way to live large (and do they really wash them between flights?!). Get a cashmere wrap, you deserve it.

Comfy Loafers

We don’t like to think about it, much less admit it, but our feet tend to grow on the plane.

It’s quite a phenomena actually. You take your shoes off at the beginning of the flight and when you land, it can sometimes be impossible to scrunch them back on.

We suggest Tod’s loafers from Mario’s or comfy Cole Haan suede slides. All the comfort you need, plus room to grow.

Airborne

Not to be a hypochondriac, but okay, we are. Admittedly, flying is not our favorite thing. We are a tad nervous about potential terrorists, mechanical problems, the Bird Flu, SARS, and other germ infested foreign illnesses circulating and re-circulating the teensy compartment...!!!

Stranger’s coughs and sniffles make us bristle and wish we had worn that doctor’s mask, but it just didn’t go with our outfit.

That’s why we arm ourselves just before every flight. Okay, it may look a little paranoid but it works. You need to take the appropriately named prevention, Airborne.

Just plop, plop, fizz, fizz before the flight and you are armed for an airborne particle fight to the finish. Give your immune system a much needed boost and then sit back with one less heart-thumping fear.

Available at Rite Aid, Walgreen’s and other area drug stores, or online at www.drugstore.com.

The Times, They are a Changin’

Speaking of turning your clock back, hopefully by now all the clocks have been adjusted correctly. It usually takes us about a week before we get to them all, except for the car clock which we can’t figure out at all, so we just let it be, subtracting an hour as needed until it’s time to spring forward.

But, in the meantime, if we want to be certain of the time, always, we’ll head over to Carl Greve, to their new Cartier boutique. There’s no better home than Carl Greve for this exclusive Cartier Boutique, just one of 10 in North America, and it proves again that we have arrived.

We adore their pretty in pink Cartier Tank Divan, a limited edition pearl watch with pink alligator band...proceeds of which benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and that will surely be a “timeless” collector’s item.

We also adore their vintage looking Roadster and their platinum classics. All of Cartier’s timepieces will last forever in quality and style, and you’ll find them only at Carl Greve’s new Cartier Boutique.

The holidays. Heavy sigh.

We look forward to them but they’re just so much work. The minute Thanksgiving is officially over, we are headed out to the tree farm to cut down our tree. But that’s just the beginning. Well, it’s going to be different this year. Remember our motto...delegate, delegate, delegate, and then take all the credit.

It’s so fun to drive around and see all the Christmas lights brightening up the houses and getting us into the Christmas spirit. But putting them up can be another story. Forget getting electrocuted or falling from the ladder, what about the nuisance of taking them down afterward? There is nothing less classy than Christmas lights in June. If our ability to return rental films is at all like our light removal system, we’re in trouble! But help is near. Let’s leave it to the pros.

Christmas Décor from Drake’s 7 Dees is the team for you. And they are turn-key. What goes up must come down and Christmas Décor does it all. You can have that look that others envy and it will disappear the moment the season does. That is a present to you.

Call them now and light up your holidays!

  C Hey Barbie!

With the rain comes the cravings and the desire for that home cooked meal. After all, we’re storing up for a long winter ahead.

There is something wonderfully appealing about a diner. The cozy booths, the causal atmosphere, the colorful and diverse clientele. The only drawback is often the food. Not at Ken's Place. Here you will find all the warmth you want and a menu that is sure to please even the most discerning.

Ken's place offers a variety of small plates, like crab cakes and calamari salad, as well as full entrees. Our favorite was the 28 East Pork Chop, a thick chop glazed with a light teriyaki-style marinade and served with Granny Smith applesauce with ginger. On the side is a heap of creamy scalloped potatoes. We dream about those potatoes.

Aside from their standard menu, Ken's Place offers themed prix-fixed menus the first Sunday of the month. For $29.75 you get a four course meal with wine, $22.50 without wine. Kids under 12 eat for $16.75. Upcoming themes and dates are:

  • December 5 - The Pleasures of Burgundy
  • January 9 - The Reign of Spain, an Evening of Tapas
  • February 6 - The Spirit of New Orleans

Reservations required for the theme nights. Any other time, just stop in. Ken's Place is a great place to get a home cooked meal without having to cook.

  Portland Picks Must Have CDs:

With winter on the way, THINK SNOW!

Snow Patrol
Final Straw

We love it when a CD matches a mood, don't you?

This fall, as the weather gets cold and the leaves turn, we find ourselves reveling in the warm melancholy of the season. Mirroring that feeling is Final Straw, the newest release by British band Snow Patrol.

Lead singer Gary Lightbody's voice makes for a versatile instrument with it's breathy, moody depth. Lightbody is backed up by a nice blend of guitar, piano, strings, percussion and electronic music. The music is thickly textured, yet very easy to listen to.

You will find yourself reminiscing about loves lost and tapping your toes at the same time. We find this CD to be a perfectly upbeat blend of classic rock music elements and current music technology. If you like Radiohead, Coldplay, Pete Yorn, or Pink Floyd, we think you will enjoy Final Straw. Look for our faves "Run," "Chocolate," and "Wow."

    Walk and Roll: Soundwalk.com

Okay, different kind of cd. But this is soooo cool. Get the entertaining insiders walking tour for neighborhoods in San Francisco, Paris, London, and New York. Plunge into the heart, charm and romance unique to these cities.

Let Soundwalk’s audio tour whisk you away through lesser-known haunts, sights, and obscure boutiques all mixed with city sounds, music, and humorous insider anecdotes. This is a very clever, sophisticated, state of the art experience. An enthralling way to see the world.

Artistically produced (think NPR), this is an unconventional way to see the city’s neighborhoods (e.g. New York’s Ground Zero, the Meatpacking District, Wall Street, etc.).....taking the type of museum tour technology and translating it to these famed streets. Everything is perfectly synchronized, with sounds that conjure up a sense of being there, back with the gangsters and the flappers and your ancestors just off the boat.

3 Nothing like the holidays to remind us of home, good times, old times. This time of year takes us back to another time, to a place where Political Correctness wasn’t, cigarette smoking was good for you, and we were uncertain what a seatbelt was (let alone a car seat). We felt safer, some ignorance is bliss.

For great classic gift ideas visit HomeTownFavorites.com. Remember Astro Pops, Big League Chewing Gum, candy cigarettes (great party favor for playgroup!), candy necklace and candy buttons. Or what about Pop Rocks, cinnamon Toothpicks, waxed lips, and Zotz?

If you know someone with a sweet tooth that was a child in the 70s, a prerequisite of course, give them their decade in candy. The 70s Decade Box. A fun gift idea!

  5 Mmmmm, Delish!

We know, we know. Enough about perfume. Okay, but just one more. We care how we smell. We fret over our signature scent. And we don’t want just any old smell. We love a natural (not too natural!) fragrance and certainly not one that makes other people’s eyes tear. Our scent needs are simple, but we are so picky, picky, picky.

Donna Karan's new fragrance, Be Delicious, is her tribute to the city she loves (and that we love, 2nd to Portland, that is) - New York City. Fresh scents like apple, cucumber and grapefruit meet the sensual exotic flowers tuberose, magnolia and violet to create a scent that is clean and fresh enough for day and still sexy enough for night. A 24 hour perfume from a 24 hour city, as fresh and daring as the city itself and even the presentation gives a nod to the big apple - a sleek metal and glass apple shaped bottle.

Very cute. We think you will love this modern yet warm perfume...we know we do, we can't stop going to the bottle, opening and enjoying it!

KIDS WILL HAVE A BALL IN OMSI'S NEW INNOVATION STATION
New Hall Explores Human Side of Technology

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry invites visitors to experience Innovation Station, a new permanent exhibit installed in the museum's historic Turbine building.

Opening November 11, Innovation Station encompasses more than 20 technology-themed exhibits, plus a new and expanded Vernier Technology Lab and the sure to be popular Inventor's Ball Room-a wild, interactive exhibit that has nothing to do with dancing, and everything to do with
the process of innovation.

"Technology has become so ubiquitous, people are often not even aware of it," said Ray Vandiver, OMSI vice president of exhibits. "We're pulling back the curtain with Innovation Station to show the human side of technology and the boundless creative opportunities even simple systems will inspire."

Innovation Station's collection of more than 20 exhibits includes:

  • Inventor's Ball Room
The Inventor's Ball Room, the centerpiece of Innovation Station, encourages families to develop their creative problem-solving skills by inventing various self-designed systems to propel some 10,000 spongy ping-pong-sized balls throughout the hall.

Seven air hydrants with valves and vacuum-like hoses throughout the room allow visitors to push balls through more than 50 different contraptions.

The ball hopper—suspended in mid-air, is sure to be a favorite target. It holds 5,000 of the primary colored balls, but when you add ball number 5,001, the hopper spills all of the balls onto the visitors below without warning. Nearby, a 22-foot-long "maze wall" peppered with 64 interchangeable valves, will inspire creative mosaics of propulsion.
  • Racing robots
Two large robotic arms skip life in an industrial plant for a life of education at OMSI. No one wants to talk to an arm, so the first robot picks up a flat screen monitor with a human face to serve as a personal tour guide through the world of robotics. OMSI personnel program the robotic arms, making the exhibit both flexible and unique to the area.

Visitors can race the robotic arms in a "loop and wire" challenge that demonstrates the delicate, yet fast capabilities of these modern marvels. Nearby, a Mars rover exhibit and other interactive games allow visitors to test their own programming skills and learn about robots' strengths and weaknesses.

The exhibits of Innovation Station are included with general admission to OMSI.
