  PORTLAND PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
January 7, 2005
Welcome to the first Portland Picks of 2005! This is our year, the year of the aware woman. The year that we have been working towards, a new era and a time of completion and renewal. We have done the watching and the waiting (that is so last 2004). This is the year to act. You’ve come to the perfect place to plant your feet and face forward. We have the helpful hints you need to capture the glory you seek. Up, up and absolutely away, finding your place in the world and harmony with your surroundings can be simplified, and we're providing a roadmap.

Portland Picks:

First week of those pesky resolutions, so how’d we do? We were very good at the shopping resolution. For the others, well, we’ve still got time. And while we are at it, we added a few more. We figure if we have a bazillion of them, we’re bound to make a dent.
  Resolutions:
  1

New Year’s Wishes: We’re exhausted, yet we can’t quite say goodbye to the holidays yet. We’re feeling a melancholy mix of holiday hangover (overindulgence on every level) with a pinch of 2004 postpartum (after all that work, and all that hurrah, it’s really over?) You probably think we’re crazy, but honestly what do we look forward to next? Ground Hog’s Day? We think not.

Well, Valentine’s isn’t too far off but that can be bittersweet as well. No, we’ll just hang on to these holidays one more little minute and send our Happy New Year’s cookies and wishes to all our friends. And no better place to get the goods than Eleni’s New York. And before you officially start that Bikini Boot Camp of yours, just one little itty bitty ‘05 iced sugar cookie for you, Dearie. You deserve it after all that!

Give: Tsunami relief – Give Locally, act Globally

  • Mercy Corps
The biggest earthquake in 40 years and the ensuing tsunamis have killed over 135,000 people and left families in Southeast Asia grieving, homeless and vulnerable. At this hour, Mercy Corps global emergency team is engaged in a rapid, lifesaving response, distributing critical food, water and other provisions to severely affected areas.

Voted one of America’s Best Charities, Mercy Corp is based in Portland. It takes so little to help so much.
  • Red Cross, Oregon Trail Chapter
When disasters strike, Red Cross and Red Crescent societies around the world provide water sanitation services; family linking and reunification; and relief supply distribution. You can help.

Please make a donation to the American Red Cross International Response Fund. Call (503) 284-1234 or click here to make an online donation.
  • ShopCityGirl.com, a local shopping website, will be giving a portion of all proceeds to the tsunami relief and recovery efforts through Northwest Medical Teams based here in Portland.

Do what you can for the world and recognize your limitations. In 2005 be aware of the planet, realizing your place within it. Learn to coexist with stress. We have a path to serenity in 2005 and we are all about baby steps.

In some instances their teeth have moved since the metal mouth of yesteryear; some never had braces at all and can now afford them. If you would like a perfect smile in the new year, check out the new Invisalign braces.

A revolutionary new treatment that straightens teeth invisibly. And it’s so easy.

Get Healthy:

Pharmaca is not your every day drug store. It’s the drug store of the future, and yours for the shopping at Uptown Shopping Center.

Pharmaca is a modern day pharmacy that promotes wellness through informative events, and combines holistic and naturopathic options with traditional medicines. This is no Rite Aid, truly the Whole Foods of pharmacies and an evolution we say is about time. Pamper yourself with indulgent products from Pharmaca’s body and soul zone, check out their luscious body oils, aromatherapy and bath products. Treat your skin to a wide selection of scrubs, masks, moisturizers and lotions. Try an herbal alternative, talk to a Pharmaca pharmacist. Buy a gift for baby, relax and read a book, get your blood pressure checked on your schedule. It’s the pharmacy of the future but all yours right now.

Check out their regular events, shop for their organic skincare and homeopathic products that will get you started on a healthy and happy 2005. This is a fabulous pharmacy and we only wish we had one closer to home.

Unwind:

Discover Peace of Mind this New Year.

Your cell phone is vibrating. Again. There are 50 unanswered emails in your inbox, all marked urgent. You listen to the news, read the ticker at the bottom of the TV screen, surf 300 channels, shop for sneakers online at midnight, cook dinner, and help the kids with homework. Stress has been a dominant feature of our way-too-busy lives for decades, but in recent years our inability to disengage ourselves from the constant information, noise, lights and sounds in our 24/7 world has made it even more crazy. We feel overwhelmed! We need Peace of Mind from Origins.

Origins has a new product line called Peace of Mind that offers that much needed Calgon moment on the spot. Available at Origins stores at Washington Square and Pioneer Place. And while you’re there stock up on a bevy of aromatherapy, bath products, facial scrubs, and other pampering products to help you achieve your much-needed Zen time in the comfort of your own home.

  • Or maybe you just need to kick off the New Year with a total spa experience. Let others take over and makeover the new you....

Nirvana Apothecary and Day Spa is indeed of another world, and one of our favorite spas in Portland that cater to all your senses.

Lush milk and honey pedicures, warm footbaths in rich copper basins. We love their natural Microdermabrasion or their Oxygenating Facial that firms and tightens (also a Hollywood favorite). Experience the true escapism you deserve when you walk off the Portland streets into Nirvana, and into another very Moroccan-themed world.

  9 Save Gas:

Vespa Portland has a new store in Pioneer Place and like that doggie in the window, there’s a retro pink one that is calling our name and making us weak in the knees.

This is definitely a toy we wish we would have mentioned to Santa. But maybe it’s not too late for you. Think how cool you will be buzzing to the flower mart on your little pink Vespa. Plus they have really cool retro shirts and shopping. Vespa is just plain cool, so European. And you’ll be doing your part with conservation and the environment. Think how much gas you are saving. Think how easy parking will be. It’s such an easy purchase to rationalize! But don’t forget your helmet. We think Pink.

Clean Out Your Purse:

Yes, simple you might think, but a symbol of a fresh start to the new year.

Better yet, toss out the old purse you have and just buy a new one altogether. Think efficient, new, clean slate, starting over! (Another good rationale for this purchase!)

  • Keep him on his toes with this Juicy Couture ´Dump Him´ Roll Bag

Make a sassy statement! A playful little purse punches up soft leather with graffiti-inspired advice printed on the side. Chain accents on the strap and a hanging heart charm add some heavy metal to the mix.
  • Or for the slightly more conservative: Big bags are Big and back, and Green is still in. And of course you can’t miss with Kate Spade.
  • Fancy yourself more of a Coach girl?

Check out their SUEDE GALLERY TOTE
Bright and beautiful. Their striking new Gallery Tote features the Coach Optic Signature pattern in vibrant colored suede. (coming in February in pink)

11 Beautify: Try these hot new products for a beautiful new you in the new year.
  • If you don’t want to go to the dentist for a teeth-whitening session (and saving money is also on your list), or if you fancy yourself more of a do-it-yourself type, Go All Out!

    Go All Out Starter Kit

When you want to flash a dazzling smile, you've gotta go all out. Go ALL OUT has got all you need to take your smile from drab to fab for an all out gorgeous smile. Dr. Jonathan B Levine, New York City aesthetic dentist and smile expert recommends three simple steps to make your smile all out healthy and beautiful. Go all out wow when you Whiten, Maintain and Protect your smile with GoSMILE.

  • After the holidays and a wicked abuse to the eyes, you need Eye Area Therapy System

Smooth away puffiness, dark circles, and fine lines as you nourish the delicate eye area, with this dynamic duo of Dr. Perrione’s patented eye treatments enriched with alpha lipoic acid antioxidant vitamin C.

  • Or check out Benefit’s, Eyecon. Eyecon deflates and fades dark circles, and gives your eyes a fresh look. Infused with extracts of sweet almond and apple fruit, this amazing eye treatment nourishes, smoothes, de-puffs, and fades dark circles. Apply to the entire eye area day and night for youthful, bright eyes.
  • Time to toss out the old cosmetics and invest in new, fresh and fun makeup that will change your look. Some of our favorite new finds for a fun and flawless new year is the vintage inspired Quickie Chronicles from Too Faced.

Even though, after a month long party, it’s hard to admit we’re fond of Quickie Chronicle’s The Party Girl (guess some things never change.)

The Party Girl likes things swingin' and swanky. Soft, flirty eyes, freshly flushed cheeks, and pouty pink lips are her uniform. Now, you can bring out your inner Party Girl with this party-ready palette of sheer, sizzling colors.

  12 Eat Meat:

Okay, maybe not the usual resolution, but when it’s this good, we say go for it. Gartners Country Meat Market. This is a butcher in the old fashioned tradition.

When you arrive, it’s usually so busy you have to take a number. They’ve been around for over 40 years, and they carry the largest selection of the highest, healthiest quality of meats. Gartners make their own tangy mouth watering marinade. They tenderize the meat so it melts in your mouth. Marinated flank steak and beef short ribs are our faves for the barbecue! For the best Game in town, literally AND figuratively, visit Gartners. If you have guests to impress, Gartners is the only place to go. It’s worth the drive out there....stock up for the long winter, oh and then there’s the summer!

13 Get in bathing suit shape....and then get the bathing suit.

Spring is coming, vacation’s looming. Time to get in ship shape. Make a commitment to work out four times a week and cut the carbs (no breads, no sugars, no rice or pasta) and watch the pounds fall off. Make a contract with yourself. Remember, a deal is a deal, even if it’s with you. Don’t let yourself down. Then you’ll be bikini bound!

You might also look into Thermage on your tummy, to tighten loose skin from childbirth. It’s painless and though results vary, it can often flatten what those crunches haven’t yet been able to. For more information visit the Key Laser Institute.

And when you’re ready, pick up this luxury (albeit racy) bikini from designer Lucien Pellat-Finet. He calls it ‘Paris Couture’ and though discreet, it’s designed with his signature skulls and hemp. You’ll be looking wild. And while you’re hunting for just the right suit, don’t miss Juicy Couture Beach, their darling new line of terry swimwear. Fabulous, dahling!

Groom:

Since it’s a new year, new you, it’s a good time to line up those pesky check ups: doctor, dentist, optometrist. But while we’re at it, we should probably get the rest of ourselves groomed, like, say, your bikini waxed. Let’s get all cleaned up, remember that fresh start? We know, unpleasant, kind of like going to the Gynecologist, but just grin and bare it....or shall we say bare all, and you’ll be happy you did. In fact, you’ll get a “leg up” for spring break (tee hee).

Although it sounds like an oxymoron, for the best bikini wax go to The Face Place and try their Frenchini (ask for Doreen and tell her Portland Picks sent you).

See you at the beach!

  Chick Sightings:
We’re in transition....in between winter wear and a hint of spring that’s definitely not quite in the air yet. We’re still wearing warm winter clothes of course, but starting to get the not so subtle tease from that department store window that reminds us of that sunny vacation we’re due.

Portland Pick’s CD of the week

Disco, Pop, Funk = the Scissor Sisters!

We listen to it and feel like we’re in junior high school again. It gives us happy feet. It feel’s like the late 70s...though why, we can’t quite put our finger on. Super Tramp comes to mind, or maybe a touch of the Bee Gees (we can’t believe we’re admitting this).

The instant we heard the song, ‘Take Your Mama”, we loved it, cranked it, and foolishly sang our heart out until we received humiliating glances from neighboring cars. And they are up for a Grammy for best new dance music. (See! We’re not the only ones.) We also love Comfortably Numb. In fact, we love these Sisters,...even if they aren’t really sisters, or even girls, for that matter.

Restaurant of the Week: Meriwether’s Restaurant

Meriwether’s Restaurant on Northwest Vaugn is the perfect restaurant to take a date. The new restaurant where L’auberge used to be, aptly named after Lewis, of Lewis & Clark, features delicious Northwest style cuisine in a lodge-style environment. This is definitely comfort food with their delicious House-Cured Salmon Gravlox, Roasted Butternut Squash Ravioli, and their to-die-for Crispy Sea Bass, black-eyed pea cassoulet with merguez sausage. The spacious restaurant has been renovated with a warmly designed large dining room, separate bar and gorgeous, expansive patio (not to mention the convenience of a parking lot!).

But the patio is what makes it. This is where you need to be with your date, the fire glowing off your baby blues, Frank singing in the background. You’ve got it made (or maybe he does). It’s so romantic, with a counter encircling the glowing fire pit, an outside stone bar, a covered dining area all beautifully designed architecturally to fit the Northwest ambience. You can count on good drinks, good service, excellent food and a romantic evening. As far as the date, you’re on your own but if all goes well, they’re open for brunch too, and we hear it’s fabulous.
