  PORTLAND PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
June 3, 2005

This is the season that we were placed on earth to enjoy. Our feelings for beach towels border on fanatical. Our appreciation of sun-drenched days is so deep and sincere that living in Florida would be our undoing. We love Portland in the summer with a passion that bears sharing.

This issue is a celebration of all that is Portland in her finest season. We have the beach bag, the brow kit, along with the place to order dinner from because you’ve spent all day sunning. We have you covered in style.

Sit back, sip something cold and enjoy with us!

Kiehl’s

We love Kiehl’s. They are the coolest store in Portland (okay, one of them). We want to loiter with intent to spend. They just fit our philosophy so well. Natural organic products, classic style, gorgeous space, clever and unique concept, and amazing service. You feel like you’ve traveled back in time to 1851 when they first opened. They look like a traditional old-fashioned apothecary. The trained knowledgeable ‘pharmacists’ wear white coats, which lend a timeless and professional feel. And you just instantly know you are in good hands, and can believe any good advice offered.

The people that work there are so sweet and helpful. I was in an ultra fragile state (pms), and could have gone either way (cried or hugged them at a moment’s notice, depending on how they looked at me). Here I am approaching a big birthday, and I have to fight wrinkles and breakouts. Is this some kind of joke? Is this a transition period? Is someone trying to mess with my head...um, my face? No fair. Though I left armed with weapons to attack whatever evil’s come my way: Blue Herbal Spot Treatment for those pesky blemishes, and Cryste Marine Cream to tackle, firm and rejuvenate my skin, among other yummy treats that will instantly get me carded again.

They have a chandelier, a worn leather chair, macho magazines, blue bar stools and a flat screen TV if you’d like your significant other to leave you alone while you shop. But they have great products for him too, products that are manly enough not to intimidate, yet they work remarkably well. They have a cool starter kit in a classic silver box—ideal for Father’s Day. With clean blue packaging and names like: Close-Shavers Squadron and Facial Fuel, he will no longer fear proper grooming. And Father’s Day is the perfect time for this subtle hint.

Will Beg for Dinner

What’s for dinner? That question sends chills down our spine. We’d do anything NOT to cook. We routinely buy prepared food from Elephants, Gourmet Productions and New Seasons that we proudly pass off as our own. We have no problem groveling to friends for leftovers after a dinner party. No humiliation is too great if we can get out of making family dinner. If we want something good to eat, our husbands cook. If we crave mediocrity, we whip something up. The only way we’d ever entertain is with a caterer – partly because we’ve never been good at talking, thinking, and cooking simultaneously, let alone just the cooking part. Then there’s that whole timing thing, where all the food has to be ready at the same time. What’s with that?!

Well, we have discovered Portland's best-kept secret for getting out of making dinner (at an affordable price). Get dinner for a week at what it often costs us in one night with our fancy prepared meals. Let ‘What's For Dinner?’ do the cooking and deliver delicious and healthy entrees to your door. They offer a new menu selection each week using only the freshest and finest ingredients. They are celebrating their tenth year in Portland and have over three hundred discriminating clients. Best of all, they are the answer to the ultimate daily, perplexing, anxiety-producing question, "What's For Dinner?" And, good news, you can still pass it off as your own.

  3 Healthy Living, Healthy Smiles

We have this “dentist problem.” We’ve been fired from the dentist, or we’ve quit, because we’re so persnickety about the experience. (Remember Bucky? Sure, this childhood trauma may have manifested in other areas -- though it’s made us all the more discriminating.)

After experiencing more than our share of dentists, we’ve finally found one that works [wonders] for us. That encompasses all the things we care about, and that is one we can trust. Green Apple Dental.

Green Apple Dental is not your ordinary dental office. Located in convenient downtown Portland, they offer a relaxing atmosphere, aromatherapy, massage chairs and a wonderful array of complimentary spa amenities. And their staff takes care of your every need.

They also have Mercury & metal free fillings, Cutting edge technology, Implant & cosmetic dentistry, Teeth brightening, Invisalign®, and Sleep dentistry. They are state of the art and definitely give us something to smile about and nothing to fear. We haven’t cancelled an appointment (our absolute favorite phone call) yet.

These boots are made for...

These boots were made for walkin’ and puddle rompin’ and for their adorable cuteness factor.

We’re pretty certain we’re not out of the woods yet. Sure, we had the 100-degree head fake days after record hurricane May where we admittedly started building an ark just to be safe, but we’re certain we’re not out of the wet yet.

No siree, you Mr. Rain can’t play us for a fool.

Kids love to get their feet wet...they seek out puddles. Can you imagine if we did this? Just frolicked in the puddles freely, no biggy. Arm your cool little one in adorable little western style rubber booties just perfect for this activity [that must be encouraged!].

The his and her cowpoke rain boots by Western Chief are the perfect gear for "strolling" about. Stomping in puddles, squishing in mud and skipping by tulips.

These boots are made for more than just walking!

Gilt-y Pleasure

Gilt has long been a staple on Northwest 23rd, selling their fabulous vintage estate jewelry. And now they’ve moved in upstairs too, taking over the space previously occupied by Dana Lynn (Don’t worry, Dana Lynn has moved just down the street).

Downstairs they continue to sell their vintage estate jewelry, but they’ve expanded upstairs making room for local talent. It’s a bright space featuring unique clothing and jewelry by local artisans, with a few vintage pieces thrown in.

They have three clothing designers. Gorgeous A-line skirts in bright colors with a fun and feminine feel by area designer, Darbeka. Darbeka uses appliquéd pieces and Vintage Fabrics that are rescued from basements, attics and even barns to turn them into hand-sewn clothing.

ISeeYou creates nicely tailored A-line skirts also made from vintage fabrics...think a young, cool Mrs. Cleaver, while Holden Apparel carries beautiful strapless floral tops and skirts in flowing ultra feminine styles.

They also have a small section of vintage slips that can be worn today as summer dresses, like their black sexy slip with a scalloped fitted bust, or their strapless white slip with built in bustier. So cute!

We also love their jewelry upstairs and downstairs, like their silver necklace, rings or earrings with antique typewriter keys...perfect for showcasing your initial, your husbands, or your kids.

Belly Painting

There's nothing funny about being pregnant. It frankly sucks, or is that just us? You can't eat, you can't sleep, you can't drink, you're nervous at each pang, you're depressed, grumpy, fat, sick, nothing sounds fun, you hate sex (after all that's what got you in this mess to begin with). You live in constant fear - afraid of sushi, coffee, hair color, cats, Tylenol, sick people, Caesar salad, doctor's offices, computers, your cell phone, of pregnancy books that are freaking you out. You worry constantly < what if I miscarry? How do I change its diaper? Where will it go to preschool? What if it asks me a math question? Are they really going to let me take it home? Doesn't this thing come with instructions?! You're one big fat party pooper for 9 months, no "they" lie, ten months!

Okay, the only fun we had was eating tuna melts (pre-mercury warning days, God help the children), chocolate chip mint ice cream and watching the OJ Trial. But now we've found something really fun! The Art of Belly Painting. Everything you need to make your pregnancy a masterpiece...because a beautiful baby deserves a beautiful belly.

Belly painting is the hottest fashion statement around among young, hip moms-to-be, and a cool new way to say, "I'm pregnant, so get the hell away from me!" or, okay, even "pregnant and proud." Now we wouldn't be caught dead letting anyone see, touch or paint our belly, but you can. (We would fear the paint seeping into our tummy and poisoning the little bugger, but this is non-toxic.)

We thought this was a very clever and fun gift for a baby shower or for a little sister to paint mum's tum-tum, so we picked up several at New Seasons in Sellwood. They have the coolest gift section.

Why spend a bazillion dollars on those lovely brows when you can do it yourself like a professional? This way, you will not have to worry about getting furry between appointments. We’re talking brows girls, those all too important ‘framers’ for those soulful eyes of yours.

This do-it-yourself brow kit is your new best friend and you’ll be so amazed. It’s as easy as 1-2-3. Save time and money, and impress even your discriminating self with how gifted you are at this art.

Don’t be caught with the caterpillar-resting-on-face look, groom yourself into a goddess.

Not to embellish, but...

We are not ones to embellish, except with our clothes of course. And good thing since it’s so happening right now. The ethnic look of the 60s and 70s is back BIG. Remember when black was it, head to toe black? And now everything is as bright and colorful and sequenced and out there. “Look at me!” fashion is all the rage. The peasant comfy skirts, the sequence tunics scream, “Go ethnic!” Go bright and go all out with this craze. Nothing is considered too much. Fashion has never been so fun, so get on that bandwagon girls and let’s outdo each other.

Anthropologie, Matisse, even the Gap is getting into the act, so don’t be shy. It’ll bring admiring stares and smiles, brightening the world when we can always use more sunshine. Dull is never hip. Get brash and flash and fun.

  3 You are Beach’in

You are ready for the beach with your new swimsuit, your tote, your rattan cowboy hat and your oversized glasses. You are looking like the movie star you pretend to be! That is until you bring out your tiny little white towel you stole from the health club. No Missy. Sure giveaway.

You need the bright, bold oversized reversible beach towels from Kate Spade. She does everything well, and of course this too. Check out Kate’s beach towels and all her other Beach’in new summer accessories at www.katespade.com (including her adorable new mini ipod wristlet).

  4 Protect thy hair

We grew up naïve, well duh, but we mean growing up in Orey-gone and not really understanding that the sun can do just as much damage as smoking. We lived for the moment, when the sun appeared; not realizing a little sunburn (okay a lot when we’re lathered in baby oil and sunbathing for an 8 hour work day) can harm us later, let alone age us. Now of course, after recent years of remorse and 75 spf, they say 15 minutes of sun a day is good for you. But let’s be safe. We probably get that anyway, just shopping. We need to still protect our fragile skin as well as our hair!

To protect those sunny locks, you need PHYTO PLAGE Protective Beach Spray. You’ve worked hard, spent a pretty penny, so save your hair! After all, who knows what tomorrow will bring. Perhaps ugly news of some sort that will scare us, and then we’ll learn we’re fine, and then we’ll be scared again. But really, what we know, the sun can dry your hair, and change its color in a freaky way. Don’t burn it! Protect with Phyto Plage.

You deserve gorgeous locks; protect yours, just like all the stars do.

  5 and Tote- oh! too.

To get your pretty self, your cool new beach towel and all your other new summer accessories to the beach, you need a stylish tote.

Or just something to lug all your belongings on that weekend getaway, or bring those veggies back from the Farmer’s Market.

The tote is another big summer must-have accessory and everyone’s got them.

Green Tea

Some days we don’t have time for our hot cup of tea.

We’re barely able to get a shower in some days, let alone relax with a cuppa tea. So a short cut is in order with all the same health benefits.

Now we can pop in Green Tea Gum. It’s sugar free, makes our breath fresh and is the equivalent to two cups of green tea.

7 And no Portland Pick’s is complete without shoes

This season, designers have morphed two trends, the embellished, ethnic look of sequence and beads with the wedge. And Steve Madden’s Bommbay Bronze Espadrille is the perfect example. Steve Madden's "Bommbay" are darling wedges with a beautifully beaded upper and ribbon ties that lace around the ankle for a sexy summer statement.

Log on to www.Jildor.com and see their wide selection of designer Espadrilles at reasonable prices. From designer’s like Michael Kors, Pucci, Cole Haan, Kate Sapde and more.

Oh Baby

Baby Cappeli offers fabulously fun and unique hats for babies and big girls. They are as sweet as sugar and adorned with yummy details.

Each hat is hand crafted, made from 100% super soft cotton and make the perfect gift. Like you, they are adorned with sugar and spice and lovely flowers — all the rage.

It (almost) makes us want to have another baby (don’t worry honey, just almost!)

9 One can never have too many handbags

We’ve just discovered yet another handbag designer. And she has our special new take on the Jackie O-style classic bag. If you’d like to make a statement on your handbag, check out the Lydia Clutch or the Lori Tote from her Girlfriend Collection. Made with vibrant colors and embellishments on our classic faves that will be unique to you alone.

Bari J. (the J. is for Jill, her middle name) is Bari Ackerman, a designer in the San Francisco Bay Area. Bari has been designing accessories since 2000, with most designs being sold at local boutiques. In early 2005, Bari started creating handbags ... just to wear herself. But not for long.

The more people who saw them, the more demand grew. Be the first one on your block with one and get folks asking!

  10 MacGyver Girl

We always wanted a Swiss Army knife, more for the cool factor, so we could pretend we were the campy, Outward Bound type, but it’s sort of impractical (especially if you don’t ‘do’ outdoors).

Until now. Swiss Army has created a nerd version for computer users on the move. The new SwissMemory combines a stainless steel blade, nail file, scissors, screwdriver, light and ballpoint pen with a 1-gigabyte USB memory stick.

That’s more like it. Now you’re a regular MacGyver Girl!

Portland Picks Book of the Week:

Feng Swing – A Golf-friends Guide Around the Course

Portland’s darling Kay Morse has just written a girlfriend book that’s more than merely about the game of golf. It’s a metaphor for life, a place to gather with girlfriends.

Pondering the cart path? Feng Swing’s fun, how-to approach gives you all the basics – and a bit of philosophy to boot.

Even the most reluctant girlfriend will laugh and learn as Kay points out the pitfalls and high points we face en route to balance and harmony, on and off the course.

It’s a wonderful summer girlfriend gift and is available at Meringue, Cielo Home and Garden in the Pearl, Bon Chic, Lady Golf on Macadam, Golf ETC on Boones Ferry, New Renaissance Bookstore on 23rd, Annie Bloom's Books in Multnomah, Graham's Books in Lake Oswego, and Girlfriend's on NW 23rd.

Be sure and check it out online. It’s darling!

  Portland Picks Must Have CD:

Blue Merle, Burning in the Sun

We love the crooney swooney sexy boys from Nashville, Blue Merle, their name taken from a Led Zeppelin song. They are reminiscent of The Dave Matthews Band, Coldplay, and that genre far more than they are Nashville or Zeppelin.

The first song on the debut cd, “Burning in the Sun,” is our Summer of ‘05 fave. This is for anyone that has ever had a summer romance, a passionate, romantic affair (“I would have died for her”) that shouldn’t have been (“it wasn’t part of the plan, what was I supposed to do?”), and ends in “heartbreak in the summertime.”

It’s incredibly sexy and emotional, one of those songs that, not to sound Harlequin, but reaches into you, captivating you. And, for real, we’ve played it at least 100 times — over, and over, and over -- and still love it just as much. We also adore their sweet song, Lucky to Know You. We heart these boys and we like to pretend they’re singing to us.

Blue Merle’s new cd, Burning in the Sun is a must for your ipod summer mix.
