Summer is the time to embrace and enjoy. This issue is dedicated to the twin principals of downtime and swing time. When your to-do list becomes an anchor, it is very difficult to rise above. Our method has always been to delegate, but we also are big fans of simply eliminating some of the more pesky items. Focus should be on family and fun. It is the season to abandon reason and focus on things silly and fabulous. Join us in this celebration of the things that make us happy and totally together, let us ignore those ridiculous yet distracting reality-based difficulties. Shall we rise above? I think we shall. |

| 2 | Get Foxy at Moxie You know your girlfriend who always looks effortlessly amazing? She mixes prints. She wears things with flounces and always has the hottest handbags. She blends kitschy with uptown. She’s girly but something of a rocker, too. What if you could raid your girlfriend’s closet…and better yet, what if everything came in your size? There’s a brand-new store called Moxie that can make your closet-robbing dreams come true. Moxie specializes in affordable clothes for every body – sizes 0-16 – which means that everyone’s arms and thighs and middles will find fashionable fits. The owners, who hail from Adidas, brought in more than 50 crave-worthy labels, five of them are local (plus they promised more local labels coming soon). And in the fall, look for vintage designer fashions hand-picked to fit Moxie’s milieu. Best-sellers right now are the candy-wrapper handbags (made from new but imperfect candy wrappers – you have to see to believe), Chandi printed t-shirts and the “Brazil” dress by Basic Law – promised to look fab on every figure! Mmmm, we just discovered Dolce Vita Pearl, a clean little shop hugging the corner at 12th Avenue and Flanders. One part upscale skincare apothecary, one part makeup counter, one part spa, and all fabulous! Dolce Vita Pearl carries the brands you used to have to go to high-end department stores to find: Mario Badescu (the only place in Oregon to find it), Dr. Hauschka, Natura Bise, Darphin, Jurlique, and one of our great secret loves – Bare Escentuals (we swear that their foundation is genius). You absolutely must try a spa service that utilizes your favorite skincare line, as well. Try the Jurlique classic facial for $75, or the NV Perricone MD version for $85. All facials last an hour and include a complimentary hand treatment. We likey! They also offer waxing services, a glycolic peel, certified lymphatic drainage and microdermabrasion. | 4 | Organics To You You’ve heard of road rage, but have you heard of grocery cart rage? We like to think of ourselves as Zen personified but get us behind one of those slender metallic carts and we become possessed by a less civil spirit. We are also jinxed by wrong-lane-pickage. This curse places us directly behind people who line edit their receipts and deliver bouquets of coupons at the very last minute. Our friends guffaw, but this phenomena is no laughing matter. It happens, especially when you’re in a big supermarket chain and all the registers are packed with long lines of shoppers. A clerk opens up a new register and you race to be first, fighting over the coveted space as if it were a downtown parking spot. Some are even known to ram into others, hence cart rage. We’d like to say we were above such things but that would be patently false. But now there’s a solution to this growing epidemic. Organics to You. They deliver nature’s bounty to your door. There is no reason to ram folks. You have higher aspirations and Organics to You delivers serenity and wholesome goodness together. Sigh and resume the highest Zen position on your dial. |

| 6 | The Real Deal You know you live in a happenin’ place, a city that’s jumping off the map, when it produces its own vodka. Yes, New Deal Distilled Spirits are made right here, in Southeast Portland. Here’s Part of their story, demonstrative of the true Oregon spirit, the spirit that arrived here via covered wagon, and that still exists with blood, sweat, and tears…and then vodka: In 2004, the first batch of New Deal was filtered through an aquarium, labeled with 3x5 index cards, and when they took it next door to the neighbors to ask them what they thought, they were like, “ What the hell did you just do?” It was the summer of experimentation, they developed a lot of vodkas, and they tested them all. It was brutal... it was making, testing drinking… the vodka got better, they drank more, and soon, their friends started to drink with them as well. They felt it was just wrong that you couldn’t buy vodka made in Portland. (We agree!) According to creators, Tom and Matt, “It’s fun to make vodka.” And we think it’s fun to drink. Thanks New Deal! |

| 3 | Lobster Rolls Lobster rolls are de riguer of Northeast summers. There’s the famous Lobster Roll shack in the Hamptons known simply as LUNCH. Every New England beach town’s main staple is the Lobster Roll. There’s nothing more defining than the infamous Lobster Roll when summering in Maine or Martha’s Vineyard. And frankly how can you resist? (Think Mayo!) The lobster roll is the classic New England summer experience. The ideal lobster roll is simple, nothing fancy, just fresh lobster meat, a bit of mayonnaise and a toasted bun, If you can’t get to Montauk this summer, Dean and Deluca has you covered. For $90 (not including next day shipping), they’ll send you two 8 oz. tubs of lobster salad and eight rolls to assemble your own lobster roll. Trust us. | 4 | Vintage Barbie If we could be Barbie, we’d aspire to be Princess Barbie, however, in reality we’d be Carpool Barbie, I Forgot To Wash My Hair For Three Days Now Barbie, Dysfunctional/PMS Barbie (she exhibits stink eye), Thrift Shop Barbie (enjoys the bargains); maybe occasionally Tie-One On Barbie (she comes with her own lamp shade). And because Barbie’s always been a part of our lives…. maybe we should just wear her. Why not pay tribute to that Barbie we used to know and love, that one we used to dress and undress, melt and cut her hair, make kiss Ken, and if she looked at us wrong, yanked her head off. Now you can wear your fun on your trendy shirt, from City Girl in Lake Oswego (A Avenue)…but hurry, these tees are flying out the door! |

| 5 | Shimmer Dimmer We love our fake tan. We strived all those years for our pinkish/white-ish/blue-ish skin to be tan, and finally we can, in our phony little way. But phony is good – as long as you don’t get caught “red handed.” Now there’s Shimmer Dimmer – the celebs secret to a real looking spray on. You don’t have to look like an Oompa Loompa if it doesn’t turn out just so. Just a dab on those palms and rough spots and maybe a little on that spray-on-gone-wrong, and you’re golden! |

OVER HER DEAD BODY…By KATE WHITE (WARNER BOOKS) We’ll let you in on a secret. Kate White, the editor-in-chief of the sexy COSMOPOLITAN tells us she didn’t want a magazine job – she wanted to be a detective like Nancy Drew. So, now Kate is doing both. Who says you can’t have everything? Kate has cooked up a really steamy murder mystery, OVER HER DEAD BODY. And the book sizzles with inside information about the magazine industry. Kate’s crime-writing alter ego is Bailey Weggins, who is quite appealing in her Sex-in-the-City-meets-Nancy-Drew way. Bailey signs on to work at BUZZ Magazine (one of those celeb rags), and within days, the wicked editor-in-chief is dead. We’ve got a “ding-dong-the-witch-is-dead” attitude in the newsroom, but Bailey is assigned to find the killer – and, boy, are there a lot of suspects! From her philandering boss…to a hot celebrity with a nasty secret…to her gay guy-friend who hooked her up with the job. And, here’s the best part: While Bailey is dashing all over Manhattan, interrogating one suspect after another, she bumps into the most delicious man – Beau Regan -- and has unforgettable luscious sex even before the first date. We read those pages over and over, and had to tell Kate that we want Beau. The murderer…? Oh, yeah, Bailey nearly gets killed figuring it out, and then falls into the gorgeous Beau’s strong arms. But, does she get to keep him, or is it just a fling? All we can say is that COSMO’s Kate White admits to flushing bright red as she writes the next Bailey Weggins mystery.
