  PORTLAND PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
Dec 9, 2005

Ho, ho, ho…hum.  Because of all this eating and extra poundage we're storing for the long winter we can't even fit into the new holiday dresses we bought when we were skinny five minutes ago.  It's turning us positively Scroogey.  And we're taking it out on our family, because somehow we know it must be their fault.  And darnit, a fake tan and longer lashes are not doing the trick to draw attention away from our arses.  And—oof—we have three or four more weeks of this before we go on the wagon from food and drink.

Since our fat pants are tight the only thing that will fit is a hair clip. And shoes.  And lipstick.  So we’ve decided to burn some cals with a regimen of bionic shopping.  And since we can't fit into anything, we'll just have to buy for others, arggh.

Hello

We love Oregon because it's so friendly. That's what Oregon is all about, and why we're so dang happy to live here.  And we only tolerate newcomers if they're friendly, too. That's why we are embracing our new imports from Martha's Vineyard, the nice folks that opened just about the friendliest store on the block called “Hello Portland.”

Hello Portland is a new bright spot on shiny Northwest 23rd.  Just two weeks old, Hello Portland has a cool retro vibe with its old fixtures, checkered floor, and vintage artwork.  It's a modern-day general store with different sections: holiday, toy, baby, girlfriends, party, office...you’ll find something nifty for everyone on your holiday gift list.  In fact, we found ourselves racking our brain trying to think of more people we could buy for just so we could walk out of there with more of their whimsically unique inventory.

The baby section has the best diaper bags, onesies with a sense of humor ("someday I'll egg a house"), and adorable shower gifts.  They have funky office gifts if you happen to be a Secret Santa and haven't a clue what to get.  And they carry old-fashioned toys and stocking stuffers galore, great wrapping and party hats, and tons more.

Hello Portland is indeed a general store for nifty living, and we think it's swell they've picked Portland for their new digs..so we highly Pick them.

Go Back in Time…for a Drink

You’re looking glamorous, smoking Galoises, drinking a Manhattan and crossing your legs as you saucily push your bangs away from your face…are you channeling a movie star of long ago, or are you there tonight, feeling fine at the Hotel Mallory bar?  It’s the perfect place to pretend you’re Brigitte Bardot as you make eyes at your date in a dark corner.  Oh, the intrigue!  Ooh, the romance!!!

If you appreciate historic ambience and timeless chic, this should be your number-one cocktail destination. The Mallory Bar is a respite from the super-shiny club scene.  No loud music, no pretension, just understated elegance and exceptional service in an intimate setting.  The clientele is the perfect mix of hipsters and “mature” regulars; the kind of place where you could take a hot date or your Uncle Harold.

Portland is one of the hippest cities in the nation, and the Hotel Mallory bar is one reason why.  It’s all about old-school charm, Rat-Packy swank, and sippable cocktails.  It’s our new favorite hangout, so look for us when you’re there…we’ll be wearing vintage fur shrugs and kitten heels, pretending we’re in a French film, and loving every second of it.

Merry Cheekmas

Defrost childhood memories of Santa’s dreamy workshop when you visit your own grown-up version of a winter wonderland.  But where will you find this holiday Shangri-La?  We know just the place…as always, you can count on cheeky b for the most fun and hip gifts.  Oh, and they’ll wrap your prezzies for you, too!

The Cowgirl Riders ($36.50) are the perfect indoor complement to your new prairie skirts and snap-button blouses.  Cheeky b carries four different styles that will help you channel your inner Daisy Duke (although we don’t suggest wearing them if you plan on washing cars in a bikini).  More importantly, they really hug your feet, and the padded sole is slip-resistant, so no more skids around the kitchen corner!

They also carry fab finds from ESCAMA, which means “fish scales” in Portuguese—a new company that unites fashion and function by working with recycled materials and Brazilian cooperatives.  The messenger bag, shoulder bag, and clutch are hand-crocheted using various colors of nylon thread and hundreds of recycled aluminum tabs.  Fabulous—and good karma.

Give Design This Year

We know how important your friends and family are to you, and we know how hard it is to find that really cool, really perfect gift.  That's why we've searched everywhere for the most innovative, modern, and well designed products, and lucky for you they're all in one place: Relish.

Rather than support the further mass-production of design, Relish seeks products that can have added value, be beautiful and functional, and have lasting significance.  Their search for more individual, limited edition, design-oriented products has yielded a meticulously edited, ever-evolving collection of more than 40 designers from around the world.

And now it‚s time for Relish’s annual Holiday Social—an evening of non-frenzied shopping and socializing with neighbors, friends and many of the local artists that Relish features.

On Tuesday, Dec. 13, from 6-9 p.m., the Relish Holiday Social offers even more reasons to shop at Relish.  Along with free MOMA gift-wrap, you’ll get 15% off any $50+ purchase of home, fashion, bedding, jewelry, or holiday items.  In an effort to inspire you even more, simply make a purchase and you’ll be automatically entered to win Relish’s 6-Point Star Holiday Tree.  It’s designed to look like what it does—display your holiday ornaments in a non-religious, non-traditional, unconventional way that is eco-friendly.  See you at the Social.  See you at Relish!

What’s Better Than Thermage™?

Want to look your best in 2006?  We’ll let you in on a fabulous secret: we know something better than Thermage™.

The Key Laser Institute for Aesthetic Medicine was the first site in the Pacific Northwest for pre-release studies of Thermage radiofrequency treatment more than four years ago…now they’ve done more Thermage treatments than anyone else in the Portland-Metro area.  Thermage remains a tool among their long list of options in their Face Lifting Without Surgery™ program.

So what could be better than Thermage?  Here’s another secret: For more than a year, Key Laser has conducted studies comparing Thermage and Gentle YAG™ laser treatment…to the point that Dr. Key now prefers Gentle YAG over Thermage for skin lifting and tightening of the face, neck and chest. And, they’ve incorporated the Gentle YAG laser into their LipoToning™ treatments for cellulite, and for tightening/toning of abdomen, thighs, and buttocks.  The results are impressive.

Click here for your gift from The Key Laser Institute: $500 off your first Gentle YAG Laser Treatment!

Frock On

There's nothing like the holidays…all the decorations, the chill in the air, the spring in our step as we frolic down the street.  All the windows are decorated with cheer and imagination, like at one of our faves, Frock on Northeast Alberta.  The “heavenly creatures” in the window epitomize what's inside this festive, far-out store.  You’ll find gifts and frocks as unique as you and your friends, like their cool, locally made belts and felt collection of rings and hair clips, as well as handbags, sweaters, funky socks and adorable baby vintage.

But wait, there's more!  If you want to make your own gifts that don't look like your 6-year-old pitched in, sign up for a class at the Do-It-Yourself Lounge in back (www.diylounge.com) and whip up something gorgeous like their pink fluffy crafty tulle wreath.  Nothing spells l-o-v-e like a handmade gift.

Whether you're married or single, if you want to experience satisfying relationships, you must know how to understand the men in your life.
Understand Men 101, a three-hour seminar offered by PAX Programs, covers such questions as…

  • What is the number-one thing women that don't know about men?
  • What makes men want to take care of us…or just take our clothes off?
  • Why is it that the men we're sexually attracted to never like us, and the ones we aren't attracted to always do?
  • What can men tell just by looking at us?

Find out the answers to these questions and more about the Celebrating Men, Satisfying Women weekend workshop!

And best of all, it’s free when you mention Portland Picks!!!  (Normally $45.)  For women only…invaluable but free to you!

Casual, Comfy Chic

The Adidas store in the Pearl just expanded, and their new space is chic, stylish, and a great place to outfit yourself in some truly hip casual wear.  (And since this is, after all, Portland—dedicated home of casual dressing—you can buy fab jackets and cool kicks to wear just about anywhere.)

We loved their new offerings, like the line inspired by Muhammad Ali and Andy Warhol’s images of him.  Ali is not only an athlete, but a pop icon as well. Andy Warhol expressed this aspect in his many paintings of Ali.

Ooh, and the Rising Star Oddity collection, inspired by the Japanese and their love for all things different! It’s all about taking the norm and completely turning it on its head, with unexpected fabric combinations, wild color twists and graphic prints.  And don’t forget the Respect ME line from Missy Elliot, and the Rhythm collection, for a more feminine street look.  Ooh, girl, you look good!

Get Piggy With It

Imagine little Sally's surprise on Christmas morning when she finds her Camel Kit under the tree.   And for him, nothing says I love you like a Pig Kit.  No, really!  This year, give something awesome and truly unique: a life-changing kit from Portland's Mercy Corps.

A Mercy Kit is a unique way of sharing your dedication to help make the world stronger and better for those most in need.  By ordering Mercy Kits, you will be making a donation on behalf of a loved one or friend.  Each donation is a symbolic contribution to the entire mission of Mercy Corps, and will be used where most needed to help children and families in need.  Pakistan, Tsunami, Katrina and Niger kits will benefit those emergency funds.  A cow, pig, or goat kit can provide income and nutrition.  There are also Women's Small Business kits, Health Kits, Garden Kits and even Soccer and School Supply Kits.

Forget the fruitcake, the stinky cologne, the candle they'll end up re-gifting next year, and give a Mercy Corps kit instead.  (Plus we're pretty sure you get bonus karma points, not to mention the cool factor, which is a gift unto itself!)

The show-stopper in the I’ve Been Naughty Love Kit is the Remote Controlled Panties powered entirely by a remote control that works up to 20 feet away!

She’ll need plenty of mistletoe when she's wearing her I’m So Sexy Lipgloss, and then there's the Bonding Tape that will bring her closer to the one she loves.  She can flirt and tease with the Va Va Voom Boa, flaunting her wanton ways.

And what gift would be complete without chocolate?  With a paintbrush, a spoon, or just her fingers, Melt Chocolate Body Fondue lets her express her creative side…

Pay no mind that our 6-year-old wants one, too, that just shows how universally cool these are.  This is the trendy accessory of the moment, where cool meets common sense. A no-nonsense trendy accessory that is being embraced by celebs and fashionistas alike.   This Nike digital watch is so “it,” and happily, it comes in an interchangeable cuff that keeps you up to tempo.

And not that you would ever sweat, or even perspire, but let's just say that if you did, this is no-worry wear.  Its water resistance makes sure sweat or splashes won't get in the way of your play.  If you're feeling blue or mellow yellow, the interchangeable bands come in every color for your oft-changing moods.

Suitcase?  No…Shoe-Case

Traveling this holiday?  You know you're going pack at least six pairs of shoes because you never know what you'll need...so heck, just bring them all.

But don't stuff your shoes in with your clothes!  Eek.  What are you thinking?  Those precious kicks need to be cared for properly.  You have a responsibility to them.  They are counting on you.   Sure, your clothes and shoes belong together, but they don't need to spend every moment that way.  Like all of us, they need their space.

We found a shoe tote where they won't get crushed, and your clothes won't get mussed.  And they come in various colors and piping to coordinate with your suitcase and duffel.  Your shoes will thank you.

“A Christmas Carol: A Victorian Reading”

In the mid 1860s, Charles Dickens took to the stage to give dramatic readings of his famous holiday story to sell out crowds. Working from the text of the author's original reading copy, Thom Bray (whose credits include stage, screen and television), faithfully re-creates the theatrical experience that Dickens' Victorian audiences had!

Appearing in full costume as Mr. Dickens himself, Mr. Bray recreates a magical moment in history when literature met theatre. Performed downtown in the beautiful, Christmas decorated Old Church, a late Victorian landmark building, this production is like stepping into a time machine to a Christmas long ago!
